thursday night I had an auto-update for Mozilla-Firefox. All was fine... Until this morning when I went to access my Bookmarks/Favs & they are all GONE!!!!!
5, yes FIVE YEARS worth of stuff... GONE...Anyone know how I can recover them? ps: just checked C: drive & found the "profile" from the last harddrive replacement. All my old-OLD stuff is in a folder. But the most recent stuff is no where to be found. Rob

Check your docs and settings folder for the profile you use when you log into the computer. You might find your favorites there. Are you icons on your desktop gone as well? Check to se if you are currently using a "temp" profile.
Also is system restore turned on? You can restore any previous settings you had before you updated your machine. |

For future use might periodically back up your Firefox with this program:

firefox profile locations:
XP = C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ Vista = C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ within the "Profiles" directory you will see folders that appear to be named randomly (4D5g5ht2 or something like that). look through each one of those random folders for a file called "bookmarks.html". to preview if the file has your bookmarks, double click it and it will open up in a browser window. once you located the lost bookmarks.html file, right click and copy it to your desktop. open your browser if it's not already open, click on "Bookmarks" menu (at the top), then click on "Organize Bookmarks...". once the Bookmarks Manager opens up, left click on the very top folder in the left column ("Bookmarks"). then within the Bookmarks Manager, drop down the "File" menu (top), click on import, and you should be good with the rest. there's more efficient ways of doing this, but it's easier to follow this way. when you're done with the "bookmarks.html" file that you've copied to your desktop, email it to yourself (webmail is best in the event you relocate or switch providers eg. gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.). now you'll have a copy with you forever. for my personal synchronization of bookmarks (backup by default) i use http://www.foxmarks.com |
