Default 08 STi BBS Option

Just read in a road test that the 18'' BBS wheels are 7lbs. lighter than the standard 5-spokes! This means that any STi kitted with the standard 5-spoke wheels will be quite a bit slower than a STi fitted with the optional BBS's.

What was Subaru thinking? Not only are the 5-spokes ugly, but they are 7lbs heavier than the BBS's!!! That's a huge difference when you consider rotational inertia and effects on unsprung weight.

I think, for those who cannot afford the BBS option, spring for a used set of 05-07 17'' BBS take-offs if the offset works. They sell for cheap on the forums since WRX's can't use em.

I think Subaru realized that most STI owners just buy aftermarket wheels to begin with.

I think "quite a bit slower" is a slight exaggeration.

The BBS are an upgrade, making them lighter justifies the upgrade...making people willing to buy it.

What was Subaru thinking? What every company thinks: How can we get people to buy our stuff?

Its hilarious how many of you benchracers cannot wait to debate aspects of a car nobody in the US owns yet.

Why after nearly 4 years of having BBS's standard with every STi (except the Limited), did Subaru make them a option and then bump up the price of the standard car even more? It would have been better to just stick with 17'' BBS standard and the 18'' as a option. These 5-spokes are heavy and ugly and only really belong on a Mazda3.

I can tell you from experience that just dropping 5-6 lbs on each corner made my car feel more responsive under acceleration, and also made the steering response much better.

Stop asking "Why?"

When talking about a BUSINESS the answer is always the same.

Read what I said again.

If they're cramming more technology and better stuff in the car, while still keeping it relatively near the price of the old car, I can live with the "ZOMG HEAVY" non-bling wheels.

Go cry more.

Not crying. I just feel that a car like this with the pricepoint it is deserves a proper set of wheels standard. That's all.

It will be interesting to see how the hatch looks with a smaller set of wheels (17'') versus the 18inch wheels we see on it right now.

Does anyone know what offset the 08 STi is running?

I didn't order the BBS option.

What I do plan on doing though is changing the tires as soon as the vehicle is in to either some nice AS tires or snows. Then, by this summer, I'll either purchase a used set of BBS takeoffs from an 08 or a set of Gram Lights or SSR's for the stock rubber for the summer.

The extra 2 grand in financing costs more than 2 grand in the end. Would be nice if they were stock, but oh well.

^^^It'll probably be difficult finding a set of 08 Take-offs for sale. You should probably shop around right now on the the forums and try to score a set of lightweight 18'' wheels with the right offset for cheap (in the classifieds). I reckon the demand for such wheels will go up once the STi is released.

It's alright, I won't go narrower than stock anyways. I'll wait for some of the aftermarket manufacturers to put some out. I kind of regret not opting for the BBS package now on the pre-order. Thanks for the advice though.
