You know thats interesting hear. I've never had a dealer giving me a discount on warranties. But then again that was from Dodge on 3 occasions on the cars I've owned in the past. Normally if I buy the car with the warranty, the car will get marked down a little, but the warranty is pure profit.

That rule of thumb goes for lots of other things too like CompUSA. Their "Technology Assurance Program" or TAP is their extended warranty. It has anywhere from 75%-85% profit margin. That makes up for the low markups on the computers that only have 2%-10% markup.

Oh one more thing, I am under the assumption that you do not need to buy the warranty till right before the 3yr/36k mile runs out. The dealer will not mark it up anymore than buying it with the car. But I could be wrong on this.

The thing to do is find out who the finance guy is at your closest 10 dealerships, FAX each of the finance guys saying "I will be buying the XX month/ XX mile Subaru extended warranty w/XX deductable in the next 2 weeks for my Subaru Impreza MYXX VIN XX XXkmiles. I am contacting a number of dealers and will purchase the warranty from the dealer with the lowest price quote."

If you want, since the list price is probably 2-3x the dealer cost, and the list is for example $1500, you can add something like "Any quotes over $750 need not reply, as that is well over my target price range."

You can buy the warranty any time up to the 3yr, 36k basic warranty. I like Armand1's idea. Clean, clever & no bs. Also, let's hope Scooby doo comes through for you.

Smile Extended Warranty Source

Thanx everyone for the replies. I am going to try Armand1's sugg. Sounds doable and straight forward. I have 14K on the Rex and putting the miles on fast. Plan to keep for awhile and would like to get the ext warr for peace of mind.

Finance Mgr wanted $1800 & this seemed a bit much.
Paid $650 for my SHO's ext warr, course that was back in 92. Still have it, despite wife's urging me to sell. Oh well, give & take.

Check out this thread: there are some price quotes there, including one from a dealer in CO who is selling for 50% of list + 10% = 60% of list.

Don't sell the SHO!!!!

I've got a '93 black MTX SHO sitting in the driveway also. Just can't give up that top end sleeper power

I WOULD sell it for the right price though... could use some wheels
