That kicks ass, dude. My gf's dad (a longtime photographer) has wanted to get a DSLR -- I just sent him the link.

Btw, this is almost 1/2 what I paid for my XT a couple years ago (also during a Dell sale).

send him the link to the B&H lens sale as well, those are the lowest prices you can get the best lenses for, and from a super reputable seller too.

And yes, this is THE camera to get if you are just starting. be warned, it does NOT come with the 18-55 kit lens, so you will have to buy it (ebay for 50 bucks) or buy some better lenses since it isnt that good anyways. but the body itself is a great one to learn on.

no, it has no lens. google SLR to learn more. SLRs have no standard lens like most point and shoot cameras do. you have to put on onto the body in order to take a pic. this allows you to choose a lens (from whatever ones you buy) for whatever situation you are in.

Jesus, that's awesome!

My recommendation to people taking advantage of this and can't afford to drop a lot of money on a great lens is to pick up the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - the Image Stabilized version of the kit lens. Nice little lens for the price (around $180) and the IS makes it much more usable.

I totally. I told him, "Believe it or not, this IS the cheapest these lenses EVER get."

And damn, Sam, that's a good deal too. I hadn't heard about that lens.

As Protege said, it has no lens. You have to buy that separately. I'd recommend looking at the Rebel XT + 18-55 Lens kit.

This is a GREAT camera for someone looking to get into photography. It was my first dSLR as well as many others. But, before you go dropping the $ keep in mind that this camera won't just instantly take better pictures for you. There will be a learning curve involved, the sooner you realize that and start learning, the better you'll be in the long run. (see the NSOP link above)

FWIW, even as the owner of a 1D Mark III and a 40D I'm fighting the temptation to get in on this deal. I absolutely love the Rebel XT's balance of great image quality and compactness.

Those pics were taken in full automatic mode... after me owning the camera for 4 days.

I can't even imagine what it would be like with practice and a variety of lenses.

tempting...

edit:
OK, It's $399 at B&H, so this is $17 less (4.25%). Still a great deal, but nothing so crazy you need to run out and grab one if you're on the fence. If you're getting one anyway, get it at this price at dell, but otherwise make an informed discision.

I thought so as well until I saw the silver in person. The silver, instead of making the camera look more metallic, makes it look more like plastic.

You won't know the black body is plastic until you pick it up, or see it up close. IMO.

edit: oh, I see what you did there. DAMN my color blindness.

I know you can pick up the XTi with kit lens for under $600 now. From what I remember there were some serious improvements from xt to xti. Is it worth the extra $150 or so once you buy a lens?

B&H deal usually stick around unless it's a special promotion. As far as I can tell that B&H price is their standard price now so it should stick around, but no guarantees. They're great people though, call them and ask if the time/price will really help you. The dell deal will be gone soon.

It's not colorblindness. He hid it so it wouldn't show up unless quoted.

It depends. The XTi has more MP and the self cleaning sensor. But it only has one screen which is different. Some people love it some don't. For half the price the XT is a great camera to learn on. The XTi has some great added features for $300, but if you're on a stick budget the XT and better glass is a better option. Some people prefer the XTs layout enough that alone make it better. The XTi does have the same af as the 30D and a bigger buffer.
