When my gas tank needle is close to empty (1/4 or 1/8 tank left)
I refill it to when it clicks off but the gas pump says it only filled it up with 7-5 gallons. the needle moves up to about "full" --- I clearly remember this happening when I first bought this car, (used 1993 impreza L) the gas needle was on empty ( I thought I was gonna run out of gas) and I filled completely (it only took 7.xx gallons) If this tank is a 14+- a few tenths gallon tank like the owners manual says, what could be wrong with it? Would running the tank completely empty and then refilling it completely fix this error? Thanks Ben

Far as I know, both my 1995 Impreza L & 2002 Impreza WRX have 13.9 gallon tanks. Also, when you fill it up until the switch in the refuel nozzle "clicks", you usually go beyond the "full" mark. (I think you can go for about 30 miles until the gauge reads just a little below "full". On the same line, there's quite a bit of fuel when you go below "empty". The thing that seems strange (if your 1993 L has the same 13.9 gallon tank as my 1995 & 2002 Imprezas), is that you mention that from empty, it takes only 7.** gallons. Even if it was 7.99, I think that's still too low. If I'm not mistaken, from half full, it takes about 7 gallons. When I refill from 1/4 full ( or 3/4 empty) mark, I think I need about 9-10 gallons or so.
Now, having said that, my 1995 L had a faulty tank sensor once. At that time, it says full when I filled it up, but once I ran for a while, it will read somewhere below 1/2, even though I know it shouldn't be there. This was after owning the car for about 6 years, and no problems prior to that. So, it may just be the fuel sensor inside the tank. Or it could be some intermittently loose cable in the fuel gage path. Since I don't know what might have caused your readout discrepancy, I guess if emptying it and refilling it works , then that's the end of it. Otherwise, you just might need a visit to your local dealer / service rep. Good luck |
