A truck I'm looking at is being offered at $12000 and the KBB "suggested retail" value for excellent condition is nearly $3000 lower than the sale price.
If negotiating a price with the dealer, does the KBB value hold any merit, or will I get laughed out the door?

it depends how much they have in the car (what they took the car in for) sometimes there is more room than others to negotiate.
they will BS you no matter what anyway, just be honest and let them know what you are willing to pay for the truck. If you don't get what you want leave. |

I think dealers use something other than kbb or edmunds. I think it's some pay service?

Dealers use the 'black' book. It is set up similar to kbb, but the values seem to be on average $2K lower than kbb. At least that what the diffence seemed to be in cars I've looked at buying and trading.

well the vehicle is $11,988 on an internet special price.
KBB values are as follows: Trade In: $5,875 Private Party: $7,630 Suggested Retail: $9,475 Seems to me like they are way high. |

KBB is very reliable.
You can rely on the prices being 10-20% over value. |

Yeah, given the location of the dealership, they are probably upside down in the truck and need to make money on it. I'll offer them $5000 after a test drive. The test drive will probably reveal more that this is certainly not a $14,000 vehicle.

They have to be really upside down in that truck. They want more than double the value for it...

Ok then, if they are so upside down in it, will they be willing to let it go at its real value and take a loss? Otherwise, they wont move it. Not around these parts they wont.

they might be willing to take a loss on it come Dec 31st. They will want to get as many cars on the books as possible for 2007.
