Default Phx area, need trans fixed

I have a friend who broke the trans on his '04 wrx(40k miles); won't go into 1st or second gear. A mechanic at a Subaru dealership told him that the problem is most likely a broken slider, not gears, that is causing the problem. This particularl dealership told him that since the vehicle has mods(tbe, SPT intake, dyno comp tune) that it would most likely not be covered by subaru,or his aftermarket extended warranty. Faculty specifically told him that his mods were not entered into the corporate computer system so with mods removed it could be brought somewhere else. He was told to bring the vehicle to avondale Subaru; would this be worth a shot? Is racingfish the person he should talk to? Could really use some help on this one. Thanks everyone

For dealer service, definately Avondale Subaru. If you don't want to take it to the dealer, go see Robert over @ FAT. Those are my 2 choices.

I can pull it out but it's going to be hard to give any kind of quote until the trans is split.

Does it go into any gear besides 1st?

Might be a fried clutch/bearing, mine was grinding into gears a little because the clutch wasn't disengaging because it was dragging on the flywheel.

He will be likely paying out of pocket no matter what. If he takes it to the dealer and tries to hide that it was modified I think he will get even less help from the dealership.

If he doesn't like what the dealership says then he should talk with FAT, Snail, Dynocomp, or some of the ex-Dynocomp (Robotz or joebud) guys and see who he feels will do the best job for his timeline and budget.

EDIT: SWIC please don't start another argument about shops. Its the holiday season, I don't want to give everyone the gift of points.
