Question Looking for a good car audio shop

Any recommendations for a good car audio shop that has reasonable prices, sharp installers, and knowledgable sales-people? I'm not looking for super-high-end or competition equipment. Just some place where I can buy a decent head-unit, amp, and some component speakers and feel confident that they will be installed well... and not get ripped off.

Locations between San Mateo and San Francisco (and near the Berkeley-Oakland area) preferred. Thanks,

-Dave

When I used to live in lovely Daly City, I had my Camaro's stereo done at Custom Car Alarms in SF. I don't know if they're still in business, but they were right down the street from the Hall of Justice. Maybe 6th or 5th street (HOJ is on 7th, right?). Sorry, it's been a while since I've been in that part of town. Anyway, they did real nice work and their prices were reasonable. A guy named Nelson used to run the place.

Rolling Thunder in San Rafael. 415-456-1681. The prices are above cheap but the installation and sales people are one of the best in the area. Give em a call. Ask for Jeff or Aaron or Rob. Mention my name (Alex).

excellent work on all of my cars and boat in the past--lots of custom stuff and drop in equipment also. highest quality of install i've experienced (i used to work in car stereo, so i'm REALLY picky)

I quite like Sound Wave in San Carlos (they're on Bransten which I think is off of Industrial). Surprisingly enough their key demographic is over 30. They don't have a lot of stuff but what they do carry seems to be fairly decent. Each time I've been there they've always had Bimmers, Porsches and Lexuses (Lexi) in the garage. I bought my HU from them and did the install myself but they were quite helpful with advice. Prices are reasonable for a local store. Talk to Steve.

Cheers, Joe

Hey Paul (saw-jai)!

Thanks for the plug! For those who wish to see the shop here in Santa Rosa go here: www.santarosacartunes.com. At the moment, the site is not comming up. If it doesn't work right away, try later on.

Plenty of pics to look at and links. The equipment line-up is changing as we speak! New stuff is shipping now and will trickle in for the next 2 months. Nothing new from Eclipse till May June, as Eclipse is on a different fiscal year as everyone else of course, Eclipse will kick arse when they launch their products later this spring. Eclipse amps? Can you say HUGE? How about 3 kilowatts form one amp? This is just the beginning! Also, Kicker has all new amps and speakers available. Kenwood regular line and Kenwood Excelon are comming out with some really cool stuff. JVC is also ramping up with an all new head unit line up. No old stuff to be found with JVC. They realy have improved their stuff in the last couple of years.

As for the quality of our workmanship? Well, let's just say, I myself has over 18 years in the 12 volt business. Dave (Dark One) has several years as well. My boss, has been in the business since he was born. His dad owned a shop in San Francisco ages ago. His brother, who is employed at Cartunes has over 11 years under his belt. You will not find a more qualified guy to work on your car. Alarm or Audio. In total, we have 4 techs at our shop, we strive to please and that goes for prices too. Remember, competition grade installs costs lots of bucks. You get what you pay for...

Subi,

I will try to keep this short and to the point. List form...

Deck......................$300-350
High pass amp......$200-300
Sub amp................$200-500
5 channel amp.......$450-750 (this is the choice I'd go for)
Components..........$200-400
Coaxial speakers...$90-150
Woofer/Woofers....$90-200 each
Pre Fab box...........$70-100 sealed (band pass blaaah!)
Amp wiring............$50-170 (multi channel systems = lots of wiring)
Dash Pocket..........$15
Wire harness.........$15
Shop misc parts.....$10-20
Speaker Spacers...$25-35 (In a Subaru, Custom built for front doors)
Custom Enclosure..$200-400 (basic to multi angle corner load wood)
Fiber glass work....$CALL
Basic system labor.$200-300 (no custom woofer enclosure or amp rack)

As you can see, the totals if you add all of this up can get quite expensive. This is for middle grade equipment. The best way for you to approach this, is to give me a ball park budget and then I can try to work within your budget and come up with the best for the amount you have to work with. I hope this helps....

paul, have you guys ever put a sunroof in an Outback? The old car, with the raised roof..........

I'm interested, but I haven't found anyone who's said they can do it, or would even give me a quote, popup or slider.....

sybir,

Are you talking about the roof ribs? If they go down you may be able to do it. If they go up, you can't. Also, most wagons, if that is what you have, have roof ribs that don't go all of the way to the front of the car. I will check the chart at work and see what fits. At any rate, you will have to relocate a roof bow and dome light when it is done. If you get a power slider style you may be looking at a price of around $1150-1200 bucks. A pop up will cost much less and will look better from the inside and outside. Plus, they have larger openings. You can also remove the glass on the pop up too. They usually cost around $570 installed for a 20x32 sized sunroof. You may call the shop for more information if you would like. The number is 707-546-8585. Thanks.

cool

the roof is flat horizontally (well, some taller rack sliders, but they're attached, not integral, so they can be shortened.....)

It's the vertical that's the killer..

see how it's low , then rises about 6 inches back formt he windsheild?

Sybir,

It's not the roof rack itself I am concerned about, it is the roof support ribs that run along the roof of the car from front to back. Is the roof between the roof rack flat as a pancake? If not, are the ribs dips in the metal of the roof, or are the ribs the ones that poke out and run down the length of the car. The roof rack will not be a problem if you move the front bar back a little. If the roof rises in tiers then it may be possible, but the glass will have to go farther back on the roof. The glass pops up in the back 4 inches max. In most cars, the sunroof will start around 7-9 inches back from the windshield and the glass and frame of the sunroof will span back as far as 22 inches. I have sunroofs that are from 15 to 22 inches in depth and 28 to 38 wide. So, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered before you decide to do it. Perhaps you should call the shop and we could talk about it in more detail. Or, you could take a photo of the roof of the car looking down at it. Not the whole roof just the front half of it. Thanks

Paul...
