Default door switch

the door ajar light in my girlfriends 98 impreza wagon stays on even when all the doors are closed, I have a voltmeter but I'm not sure how to go about testing the switches to find out which one it is. but I'm guessing the resistance will tell me what I want to know.

I think it may be the switch for the rear lift gate, does anyone know where the switch is located and how it works.

thanks

I'm having a similar problem on my 93L Wgn. not sure the lift gate is the problem as the gate switch never has worked right since I bought it. The door ajar light came on this weekend, and stayed on I noticed this after washing the jambs. I think there may be water in the rubber boots around the pin switches causing them to short. I haven't had a chance to test this yet(pull the boots back and squirt a little WD40 on the pins) but I don't see what else has changed since Sat.

Oh I wish someone would answer you about the hatch switch mechanism I cannot figure how that thing works.

the dealer sugested that I should move the ring that the hatch latches onto a little farther in towards the inside of the car but that hasn't helped. this problem is intermittent. I don't think it is the latch anymore, i think it is one of the door switches.

the switch for the latch appears to be part of the handle assembly as far as I could tell without taking it apart, I just pulled all the plastic covers off of the rear hatch

I think the rubber is an integral part of the door switches, but I may be wrong on that one, I haven't got around to checking the resistance individually but it is going to be hard to check with the problem being intermittent.

I have the same problem with my 02 wagon, cant quite figure out what it is, it started happening to my car about 2 months after I purchased it in march of 08, sometimes it stays off for a day but then it will also stay on for a week, sucks that I cant use my interior lights as it stays on when the dash light is on! I have taken apart my rear liftgate latch twice to figure it out but still have no luck!
