Post Got pulled over for licence plate covers :(

Just so all the NY's know, it is ILLEGAL to have any kind of plate cover over your licence plate. I had some basic plate covers over mine to keep them clean, and well i got pulled over today for it and now i have to go to court about it next week. . So just as a warning, take your plate covers off and avoid the police.

Eric

Are you sure it's because the cover? or it's because it's tinted cover?

I have a front cover on mine... the clear kind though, so during the day you can't really see it. I need to check how different it looks at night, seeing how it reflects less light. No matter what, it's staying on (until my first ticket, anyways). :-P

I've known this for a LOOONG time. I'm surprised so many people get away with it.. especially the tinted ones. Some of them are REALLY dark!

2 things I never get:

the licence plate cover (both front and rear, clear or tinted) and decals on front windshields. I always knew that someday I would get pulled over or fail NYS inspection if I have either one or both or them.

Which sheriffs pulled you over? Saratoga county or Albany county? At least in Rensselaer County, the sheriffs are very very picky at the end of each month (gotta meet the quota).

It's probably because of the plate covers that make the plate unable to be read from stop-light cameras and toll-booth cameras. There's no easy way to tell if any 'ol clear cover is one of those covers, so they probably just banned all of them.

Anyway, sorry to hear it man, and thanks for the heads up.

No license plate for me either... I've had no plate in the front of my car for a long time now... As far as i know, the NY state law says you must have a front and rear plate for PARKING your car on the street. But for driving your car, rear plate is fine. I may be wrong but I haven't had any trouble since i don't park on the streets... I keep my front license plate in my car just in case though but i haven't had any trouble either.

That is terrible! Some plate covers around here are just about solid black so I can see why there is a law. I have my front plate on, and it gets bent back under my bumper in the winter from hitting snow banks. I even have a K2 sticker on the front one inplace of the statue of libertys head...and the hand with the torch comes out of the sticker. I passed inspection with it, and have been through numerous license and registration/seatbelt checks without getting caught. I understand that obstructing your license plates is a $200 fine.

Good luck,
Kevin

Yep all covers are illegal in NYS. Although only if you drive a BRP or Ralley Blue WRX do they actually pull you over for it
