Default Mahindra Scorpio M-Hawk Launched in India, Coming to U.S.

Quote:
Mahindra & Mahindra has launched an upgraded Scorpio in India called the M-Hawk, with an all-new 2.2-liter engine that puts out a healthy 120 horsepower. The Indian automaker had help in developing the new Scorpio from AVL, on the engine, and Lotus, for the suspension.

This new engine, known internally as the Eagle, has been branded the M-Hawk since both the Eagle and Hawk names have been registered elsewhere. It boasts four valves per cylinder and a host of other high-tech features. M&M is banking on this engine for its export models, including versions of the Scorpio utility vehicle and pickup that are slated for sale in the U.S. in late 2008.

Ride and handling specialist Lotus helped tweak the suspension, keeping the layout and design the same but changing damper settings and fine-tuning springs and linkages.

Lotus reportedly spent months testing in India to sort out the Scorpio's sloppy handling, the car's biggest weakness.

There are few external changes to the Scorpio except for a set of new alloy wheels and the M-Hawk badge on the front fender. The interior is also similar but with many added features such as steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, tire-pressure sensors and rain-sensing wipers that indicate the upmarket positioning the M-Hawk is going to take.

The M-Hawk will be priced about $2,500 more than the regular Scorpio, which M&M will continue to produce. The idea is to broaden the Scorpio range and offer variants at different price points.

The M-Hawk will be positioned in India against the new Tata Safari, which also has an all-new 2.2-liter common-rail diesel motor developed by AVL. The Scorpio M-Hawk will be displayed at the 2008 Indian Auto Expo in New Delhi in January.

What this means to you: This could very well be the first Indian vehicle to be sold in North America if you don't count Mahindra tractors. Hormazd Sorabjee, Correspondent

Wasn't Scorpio the bad guy in that James Bond episode of the Simpsons?

"Beware of...Scorpio!"

Isn't Scorpio an astrological sign in the zodiac?

"Hey baby, I'm a scorpio...what's your sign?"

i'd like to see an MSRP, crash test results, and emissions results on this vehicle... and isn't 120 hp out of 2.2 liters piss-poor these days? hmm.

An important detail is that it's a diesel engine, and the version we'll see in this country will be turbocharged, for 180hp/300tq, which will be coupled to a 6 speed auto. Fuel mileage is estimated in the 28-35mpg range. The Scorpio will be available in a number of bodystyles, including 2dr and 4dr pickup and 4dr SUV, with either 2wd or 4wd. MSRP is slated to be in the low 20's for base models, which includes a 60,000 mile warranty.

The US distributor of the Scorpio is Global Vehicles USA -- http://www.gv-usa.com

Nice! Cheap Land Cruiser ripoffs! Hopefully they're of halfway decent quality and can do good off-road. Heaven knows Indian roads are horrible, so there's some hope.

Mahindra and Mahindra started with a ripoff/"re-engineering" of the original Willys Jeeps. The Indian roads that these things drive on are horrible. The beatings that these take to last 7-10 years, with ridiculous amounts of miles, errr, kilometers, is phenomenal. With the high relative cost of maintenance, most arent even maintained properly. I know, my family back in India only fixes their Mahindra Jeeps only when they break. Oil changes? Who needs em?!
