Default "4WD with snow tires"

Whenever CalTrans sets up chain control checkpoints in the Sierra Nevadas, the reports (on the web and radio) say that vehicles must have chains or be 4WD with snow tires. In my experience as a passenger in 4WD and AWD cars going through chain control, all-weather tires are sufficient to get through.

Have you ever heard of them turning back 4WD/AWD cars without snow tires while allowing 2WD cars with chains through? Seems to me if condictions really were that bad, they'd just shut down the highway.

Example:
Quote:
CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW
TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM 3 MI EAST OF GOLD RUN (PLACER CO) TO TRUCKEE
(NEVADA CO)

"Snow Tires" are defined as a tire displaying the "M+S" on the sidewall. Therefore All Seasons qualify if there is enough tread showing.
The details can be had at CalTrans site I believe. And yes, you are correct, if the roads get that bad they shut them down all together.

Yep, guilty as charged (for not searching first). Thanks for the links though.

You won't ever need chains going up to Tahoe or anywhere else in California. They close the road if it's too bad, but they do let local traffic through. I found that out when they closed 80 at Reno, so I told them I live in Trukee and got through. ONLY if you are going up I-5 on the border of California and Oregon. There is a pass(forgot what it's called) that gets hairy on the border on the Oregon side. They don't like Californians too much and they might make you use them.
