How Does a Oil Temp Sender on an Extension Read Properly?
OK, so some people are using an adapter in the oil gallery plug as a pickup point for oil temp. They connect the oil temp sender to the gallery plug using a hose so the sender doesn't have to be fastened to the block. How on earth does this work? If there's no flow (since there's only one hose), doesn't the temp in the sender lag like 30+ minutes behind the temp in the engine?

that won't work for a temp sensor... ideally you won't even have oil in the entire hose, since it SHOULD be sealed on the sensor end, it will retain the air that is in there to start with. i haven't heard of anyone using that for oil temp, only oil pressure... The best place for oil temp is a sandwich adapter.

Sandwich adapters are lame, use the gallery plug. I have both an oil temp and a pressure sender in mine and it works like a champ.

That still doesn't answer the question of how, without flow, the temp sender unit stays at the same temp at the same time as the oil in the block.

^^It doesn't. Post #2 explains why the extension should only be used for an oil pressure gauge.

the galley temp sensor is more likely to just sense block temp then oil temp. a sandwich adapter has a much cleaner flow of oil past it to get the true temp.

Galley temp sensor is better then an adapter some say, as the adaptor-block could be cooled by the airflow under the car.
Also the, sensor tip is narrower then the galley it goes into, so oil will flow around it on its way through the galley. I always had an adapter ring, but due to mounting an oil-cooler it had to go. As a result I mounted the temp/press sensor directly into the block, and (before mounting the cooler) the oil temperature reading was about 5-10 degrees Celsius higher. Seeing that, I disassembled the sender, and held it in boiling water. Exactly 100-101 degrees showing on the gauge, so that would lead me to believe the adapter gives lower readings, due to the cooling effect of the ambient, outside air on the Aluminum adapter ring. I habe mounted the temperature sensor in the factory pressure warning sensor's location (under the alternator) and the pressure sensor is on a piece of S/S hose, coming from a plug near the turbo. |
