Default The inevitable happed

Thats right guys, another HKS Carbon-Ti exhaust shut down by the man. I was coming off of morrisey BLVD going on to the Neponset bridge back into Quincy. I came to a stoplight and noticed the menacing headlights of a crown vic in my rearview mirror, the I change the light bar on the roof . I keep staring at the lightbar expecting for it to just come on at any moment. I take it easy coming over the bridge, short shifting at 2.5k RPM and coasting as soon as I came to the decline. I came up to another stoplight and he is still there. By this point I could see the "Welcome to Quincy" sign and I felt as if I was almost home-free. I took it nice and easy and hummed quietly passed this sign. Unfortunately this wasn't quiet enough for the State trooper who must have had ultra-sensative hearing because as soon as I made it pass the sign, he lit up the road with his lightbar. I slowed to a crawl and let the SUV in the lane adjacent to me go by before coasting to the side of the road next to Dunkin Donuts. I turned down my music and placed both hands on the wheel. As he approached I rolled down the window and he blinding light from his maglite shined right in my eyes. He said "liscence and registration please" and I proceeded to calmly reach into the glovebox and tell him my ID is in my wallet before reaching for my back pocket. I handed everything to him and he took a peek aroudn the windshield of my car. I was hoping he would see the "Support our Police" sticker that I got from donating $50 to some police association to get me out of trouble, but it had already fallen down. He comes back to the window and asks "Whose car is this? I tell him that its mine and he asks me "Whats up with the exhaust on this car?" I of course lie and tell him thought I bought the car off the dealer lot used like this and I was told that it was factory. He says okay and heads back to the cruiser and I knew what was to come next. My night ended for a citation for an altered exhaust, giving 20 days to fix or appeal or I pay $100. I usually don't get mad about cruddy things happening because this got me really heated up. I told the trooper good night and happy holidays and I was off.

[Cliffnote for those who don't want to read my story]
-Pulled over by statie in Quincy for Alt. exhaust (HKS Carbon-Ti)
-"Support our police" sticker that I donated $50 to get failed on me
-Given 20 days to fix or appeal before getting fined $100 bucks
-Polite and respectful didn't work this time
-I hate staties when it comes to stupid tickets and their attitude towards import cars (excluding: streetracers)
-Wish I had asked him how many american cars or cruisers have he pulled over for altered exhausts.

I know guys, it was my fault for getting the melon launcher but the inner-ricer lusted over this exhaust for quite some time. I love the time-attack car look plus the deep rumble when accelerating, roar at WOT, and little pops it makes when coming to a stop in gear. Also what sounds like an explosion to me everytime I shift at redline. I really love this thing and the single tip stock looking exhausts really aren't right for the look I'm going for. I guess this country isn't so free after all.

since when do they give you 20 days to fix it

i think your referring to you have 20 days to check off the appeal box on the ticket.....you prob wont go to court for a few months if your lucky......

advice-
put the stock one back on before going to court, in your appeal say you put the stock back on you didnt realize it was an issue to put the exhaust on so you switched back after getting the ticket......most likely they will ask if the cars outside and if the officer/police rep can go look or the magistrate can go look....

thats the only way your going to get out of the ticket, and the only way youll keep yourself from getting tickets....

a maddad whisper, or borla hush or txs stealth etc.. are really your only options if you must have an exhaust in this state.....any can is going to get you pulled over at some point....

^^ I guess if I have no other options so I'm going to just suck it up and do it. I'm going to run the stock catback for a little while since I spent so much during the holidays. I'm just irritated because there is no way my car is louder than lots of other cars with modified exhaust system or a harley from the factory. They might as well ban the use of lawnmowers and weekwackers on saturday mornings. I can't remember the last time I was awaken by the sound of a cars exhaust. This sucks, I'm going to have to shell out another couple hundred bucks just because of some douche bag was jerkin his gerkin while he should hvae been pulling over people who are endangering other drivers so he had to pull me over for a harmless exhaust for him to meet his quota.

I wouldn't tell them that. I agree with putting on a stock exhaust but you already told the officer that you bought the car as it is now and thought it was stock. Better to tell them that you bought a stock exhaust system and had it installed. The officer may well have notes on everything you said. Get caught in a lie and it's worse than the original offense.

So, is MA that harsh on out of staters passing through? I haven't had an issue yet (knock on wood) and I've driven through with various exhausts including a stromung 2.5" twin tip with catless downpipe, a borla hush with catless downpipe, the hush with catted dp, and a cobb with catted dp. Am I pushing my luck?

You can't get ticketed for an exhaust in MA if your car is registered in a state where it's legal. It's not like you're banned from states because they have different tint laws or something.

Not to say some cockhole cop won't still give you a ticket though...

i only read briefly....didnt realize he told the officer he bought it that way....i would just say that in court and tell them you purchased a stock exhaust to put on the car and they should definately drop it

its worth fighting since its surchargable(sp)

Oh and i forgot to laugh at the OP for actually thinking the Support our Police donation sticker actually made him give a damn....

all of those donation things are scams.....

you need the official police stickers....aka the stickers that look like the badges or whatnot...im not going to go into detail if you have one youll know what im talking about....

people with the blue lines and black backgrounds or the "troopers are your best protection" make me laugh.....ive seen blue lines plastered on cars it gives me a good chuckle....

dont donate to something unless it is an actual officer or your at the station or something....many times the people calling have 0 to do with the firemen, police, emts etc... that they say they are collecting for. its some ridiculous numbers like 3% that the department actually gets, if that....

always make donations directly to the organization.....find out who the president of the police association is or something if you really care about donating and not just getting a useless sticker

This is very true. My co-worker (05 STi, catless TBE + UP) just beat his case. Probably something to do with having a Stromung single tip. They asked if he bought the car from some ghetto street dealer. He said, "Nope, I bought it from the dealership like that". His court date was on one of the snow storm days, I guess they didn't want to deal with him and threw out the case. They just wanted to go to lunch or something.

I've gotten yanked twice while driving normally. Catless TBE with Stromung single tip. I kept telling the trooper my car is stock and got let go both times. I haven't had a problem since I moved to NH but still work in MA.

I think there are certain troopers that make it their job to go after modified cars. Those that never got pulled over, you're just lucky, they'll get you one day.

If I get pulled over again, I'm throwing my stock muffler back on. These troopers need to go after the loud ass trucks instead of picking on us.

Are you sure about that? When I got a ticket a couple years ago for an aftermarket exhaust on my Mustang (which I beat BTW), my insurance company told me that type of violation does not infict surcharges.

How true! The lady across the street from me has a male friend who comes over and sometimes at 11 at night he is revving up his Harley and I tell you what, that thing is a LOT louder than any car could be, it is ridiculous!

Problem is, most cops ride Harleys and they are expected to be loud. If EVERY WRX were as loud as yours, you wouldn't have that problem.

As for the lawnmowers, my idiot neighbor behind me mows his lawn starting before 8 am in the summer, pisses me off! Might as well be a Harley lawnmower when all else is quiet

I was at my insurance agency on Friday and they showed me that I have 5 points against me. 3 for an accident (due to weather quoting a cop, they don't care though) and the other 2 points for an exhaust ticket.

I'm glad to see that a loud car makes you a dangerous driver

Wait, so even if I swap my exhaust back to stock and waste my time going to court. I still get a 2-point surchage on my insurance for driving in a perfectly safe manner. Honestly, its not like my exhaust is loud enough to bug anyone outside of my car.

I hate to burst your hating on harleys bubble, but they are a EPA controlled vehicle just like your car and from the factory they register in at under 80db. People change the exhaust on them, just like you did with your HKS. what your saying, would be like me blaming subarus for being to loud because you change your exhaust to an HKS.

How was your exhaust ticket written up? The actual citation code. Most exhaust citations are non-moving violations and as such don't carry points.

I've been pulled for an exhaust on my old Accord(Invidia N1). It was ruthlessly loud and I probably would have pulled myself over but It sounded sweet still. Regardless i got a warning. Just told the statey that, "to the best of my knowledge, this exhaust is 50 state legal" lol. Horse **** obviously but I did read up on MA state laws. There is no official law that clearly represents the punishment for an "altered exhaust" Its really up to the police officer. So basically, any douchebag cop that pulls you over is doing it just because they can and whatever "punishment" they hand out to you is up to them...

If any of you have heard of SEMA I suggest you join their mailing list. At least that way you'll be up to date on state laws. They've been trying to get a legislature to amend and clarify the ambiguous "law" which MA uses to at least have limitations and to create a universal method to actually measure exhaust noise..... I get periodic e-mails updating me on MA as well as several other retarded states who's yuppy politicians enjoy silence so they can hear their ego's talk to themselves in their heads.
