Default CA Emissions Question

Hi,

I recently imported a 94 Mustang from the UK to CA. It originated from Indianapolis and was registered in New York.

It passed the Smog Test easily, despite not having any California Emissions. I believe most manufacturers build all their cars to the toughest levels.

I know of other vehicles that have been imported into CA from other states without any problems passing the smog test.

The worst emissions were at idle rpm, whereby the maximum allowable HC PPM is 100 and my car registered an average of 17.

I don't think you'll have a problem. Good Luck.

Mark

Default Welcome to California

Check the DMV's website. They have a link for newcomers with info for drivers license and vehicle registration.

Also, a visual inspection is a part of our emissions testing. I don't know the state of your engine bay, but if there's anything that obviously doesn't belong, you may want to replace it with stock just for the test.

Doesn't matter that it passes the sniffer, stuff that isn't CARB legal will sometimes fail you (depends highly on who is doing the testing) At the very least they'll look to make sure you have a cat.

Don't worry about the sniffer, a modern car that fails the sniffer probably needs major work.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. Just take it to any smog ref, and get a pretest if you are worried. They will give a visual and put the sniffer in the tailpipe. They will tell you if you'd pass or not. Most likely you will. I used to live in Minnesota, but not for that long...and they do have some sort of vehicle emission requirements. As long as your cats are working, and you have a stock intake, you should be fine. Anything aftermarket without an EOD# on it, and you'll fail visual. IT's sort of a pain in the arse. But definitely, but that stock intake back on... What kind of mods do you have on your car?

no huge mods - I have a Stromung exhaust, kartboy shifter and a ganz flow intake - so I guess I better save the stock intake. Everything else is cosmetic interior - trim paint, etc.

are the clear side blinkers going to be an issue? what about clear tail lights?

what is an EOD#?

The lights won't be an issue at the smog check. The smog check is just that, for emmisions. We don't have any safety inspections like are common back east. There are laws about the lights (can't remember what they are) but that's up to the cops to enforce. Check out the DMV site that was mentioned by Bobski... you should find all the info there.

Welcome to California. I hope the move goes smoothly, too.

Cool

Don't worry about the lights. I've got all clear everything on my g/f's '00 RS and we've never had a problem. Smog is a bitch, make sure you have the stock intake on. We just moved back from Colorado, where her car was purchased, so we had to go through the same thing. The first place that I went took one look under the hood and asked for a CARB # for the intake (GanzFlow). I proceeded to tell them that I guarantee it'll pass the sniffer, but it didn't make a difference what I said, they wouldn't do it. So I just took off the intake and went to my mechanic guy. He said it looked a little wierd, like part of the intake was 'missing' and that most places probably wouldn't pass it. He then proceeded to say that it ran cleaner than just about all the cars he's seen lately. Even after idling for 10 min. Oh well, good luck and welcome to Cali.
