Default Cause of rear main seal failure

02 wrx and i guess the rear main seal might be out. what would be a cause for the failure on an 02? could there be engine damage of some sort? thanks

How many miles? Seals go bad over time or could have been defective to start with or installed incorrectly. Frequent overheating of the flywheel could cause the seal to go bad as well.

Seals wear out over time. 90k isnt too bad.

There are seperater plates on the back of the motor also, those can leak also. Usually spewing oil all over your exhaust when you go up hills.

If this is the first maintenance done to the car, it's that bad.
