Default 2008 WRX Stock vs. Stage II dyno tuning

I am thrilled with the '08 WRX ecu and have been having a blast the last couple of weeks thanks to my friends at Ecutek who have a great product called Flash Can out for the '08 WRX and STI. The new ecu is fascinating and the car really responds well to typical modifications.

In this case we started with a bone stock WRB '08 WRX which base lined at 224 TQ 198 whp on 93 octane

With just a reflash the car jumped to 300 TQ and 220 whp

We had a really nice 3" exhuast made locally which goes from 4" at the down pipe to 3" then splits to two 2.5" magnaflow mufflers all stainless - sounds really sweet. (The dual exhuast is a real improvement on the classic Subaru sound).

Also we had a 3" cold air intake system crafted.

The results are decent but I am running into limitations with the leaking POS plastic BOV, tiny turbo and undersized tmic.

We added 130 plus TQ down low and this monster spools up before 3,000 rpms

A nice low end blast of power but I need more up top.

The '08 cars have a lot of pontential.

As an aside, I was fascinated to disciover how the individual cylinders are trimmed on this Subaru motor - # 4 the one that always is blown up on people's cars who dont get tuned when they add mods is super rich in comparision to the other cylinders - time for more testing

Al

I am just uploading the video now - the '08 sounds totally different with dual mufflers

Our system is somewhat modular in that the down pipe and center sections are all the same while the customer can choose how he wants the back section - it will come with a single right side or left side 3" mufller or with twin 2.5" mufflers like this car. No power gains with twin mufflers at this power level and it weighs slightly more - but it sure looks mean and sounds amazing.

wow i can't believe that tq Al, thats really impressive

it seems like the early spooling they were trying to keep up with bmw and there 335 and appeal to that class, but it looks like the wrx lost the top end power and the graph moved to the left.

the new dual exhaust sounds pretty gnarly, i can't describe it, but i likey

one thing i cant understand with you AL is why everything is "holy sh't". you take a ride in a 300hp car and your like "holy sh't", if your in a "500hp" car your like "holy sh't" you would think after doing "so many" cars you would know what the hp feels like.

Interesting information. Are these results similar to Legacy GTs that you have tuned in the past? I was under the assumption that the '08 WRX and past 2.5GT motors are basically identicle. If that is the case, then has the ECU changed or has the 2.5GT always been such a mod happy, stock-turbo beast?

Edit: Thank you, as always, for posting this stuff up.

After 8 years in the Subaru tuning scene I remain just as passionate and fascinated about these cars as when i started.

To me its just as mentally stimulating and enjoyable to nearly double the TQ on the '08 WRX with such minor modifications as it is to make 968 whp with my race Evo.

No matter if one of these cars is making 350 whp or 450 they are frankly fast. Only a few years ago only super cars could obtain the kind of 0 - 60 mph times these cars make.

When I loose the passion for what I do and become a toxic, negative, hater like some of the characters on the internet I think it will be time to hang up my lap tops and move onto another business.

The turbo on the new WRX seems similar to the LGT and FXT indeed.

The new '07 LGT and '08 LGT are nearly identical to the '08 WRX as far as power plant and ecu. (Si drive units aside)

Nice work Al!

One question though. Am I interpreting the dyno graph correctly? It looks like you are marking less tq/hp from 5000+ rpm than stock?

Thanks

The '08 WRX is starting to grow on me with time - I have another video I will post up later of how it runs on the road

Smother, quieter and more rigid

The traction control is a huge problem - mental note - figure out how to get rid of that
