Default New Forum search (for all automotive forums including Nasioc), please test/criticize

My friend who worked at Google and is a PHD student at UT has been working on a forum search/crawler. He said it exploits forum structure to find more relevant results than the Google forum search and vB searching.

It is finally up and running and I wanted to see if OT would use/critique it.

Right now it searches around 150 different car forums (maybe more?). To search ONLY one forum you need the forum name in the search string, for example, for us you need to have "nasioc" in the search string otherwise it finds threads from alot of other forums (which sometimes is very useful)

Check it out:
http://www.forumdig.com/

example search:
http://forumdig.com/search.aspx?q=na...+inner+tie+rod

You need to understand that since he does not have direct access to the database it has to crawl the entire forum to update the search index. That means a thread from yesterday isn't going to appear. But it does a really really good job of finding relevant threads with good info. So thats how I use it. For searching Classifieds I use the crappy built in forum search and for info searches I use ForumDig. He is working on a better Classifieds search too.

If people like it and he can set it up to be in any forum's search menu box like bimmerpages.com now has (click "search") http://www.bimmerpages.com/forums/

Also, there are two options for making the search alway up-to-date.
1) He gets direct READ Only access to the forum database files. This would be the best option.
2) He crawls the forum every couple of days. This would make the searches somewhat out of date (so classifieds searchs would be useless).

He is very open to comments and criticism and I forwarded him this thread. So feel free to praise or bash anything, but please include a reason and a possible fix if you can think of one.

- Chris

Somone have Nick open up our DB so we don't have to deal with NASIOC's crappy search.

Is THIS why NASIOC has been so slow for the past few weeks? How long has this crawler been going through nasioc?

Ha, nope. He follows all the crawler rules in robots.txt so it doesnt overload servers. And since he is in the development stage he isn't crawling the forums all the time.

Also, tell your boy that it's 2008... his copyright blurb is out of date.

Leave out the "nasioc" part and search all the forums. Its pretty cool for that stuff cause lots of mods/how-tos are common across all cars.

Thanks Chris - I'm the creator of ForumDig and also a turbo miata owner. Even though I can't smoke all 4 wheels off the go, my blow-off valve makes that ricey sound that you all crave (or at least the sound that Chris does...). Plus, my 280 rwhp & 2300 lbs curb weight could smoke any of you in a quarter mile (j/k, won't go there).

Anyway, I just wanted to encourage everyone to try it out and see how you like it. Like Chris said, you can type in a forum name if you only want to search a particular forum. Of course, you'll get other great results if you just omit the forum name...

I haven't crawled nasioc in a couple months now (no, I haven't been the one bringing the site to a standstill). If y'all decide to add it to your site, it'll start getting crawled more often.

Cheers,
Jason

Ha, ok ok, less banter and more testing/breaking/criticizing.

I'm serious that he listens to any and all comments so this is your chance to actually guide a search engine to work how YOU want it.

Are any volvo forums searched? I searched for volvo stuff and I got a bunch of links from vwvortex and other non volvo sites.

http://forums.swedespeed.com/
http://forums.turbobricks.com/
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php

I am constantly searching through all 3 sites for random crap.

great idea

Very interesting.

How quickly does stuff get indexed?

I'm all for adding new search options that help take load off NASIOC's servers.

Would it be possible to just have NASIOC as the search option if we integrate? There are more than enough threads here to justify not searching other forums. And would it be possible to have a NASIOC themed results page? Just so it feels a bit more like you aren't leaving the site.

scarywoody - the site currently searches over 150 forums. I"ll make sure your volvo forums are added next time I do a crawl.

Any other feedback? I'm serious about my marketing budget. I've have $$$ to burn - give me your suggestions and maybe you'll have yourself a part time job!

Yes - the search would be totally integrated with the site. The easiest way to index is for me to just crawl the site like I'm doing now. Check out bimmerpages to see how it would be set up (click on "search" on the navbar and forumdig appears in the drop down box). There'd be an option box to search just nasioc, or to search all forums.
