Default Blew a hole in upper radiator hose. Damage Control!?

Driving home this morning, it's like -9 degrees out. I notice about 10 minutes out that the heater is still blowing out ice cold air. Right then it starts to smoke, and the dummy oil light comes on, so I immediately shut the car off, pull off to the side. I get out and smell coolant, pop the hood and there is coolant sprayed all over and coolant coming out the bottom. The operating temp was not high, and I shut the car off before I got a look at the oil pressure gauge.

Got it back to the shop, checked the oil, no coolant in the oil, so we put it up on the lift and put coolant in it, start it up and watch for the leak. keep putting coolant in, get almost a gallon in and it starts spraying all over out of the upper radiator hose. I couldnt get one until wednesday but I suppose it could be worse.

My question is this. Do you guys think any damage occurred? The temp gauge never went up. I would have to assume that there wasnt enough antifreeze in the radiator, and the radiator was froze up. The side of the hose probably blew out due to the excess pressure in the lines. The engine seems to run fine still at idle, although I havnt driven it yet.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Please discuss.

Edit: I wanted to add that when I left my friends house, I started my car and sat in it for about 2 minutes, which is far longer than I would usually let my car sit there and idle, but I figured it was cold as ****, and the clutch was kind of sticking it was so cold. I drove about 6 minutes before all this happened, and I would have to assume that the engine thawed the coolant in the block, but it was froze in the radiator and couldn't go anywhere except out the hole that it blew.

I doubt it, though it is possible.

I had this same problem in mine (weird) blew a hole in the upper rad hose and overheated the **** out of the car (almost to the H). Got a new one and everything was fine.

I doubt you did any damage to the engine. I'm wondering if there was an air pocket in the upper hose that was frozen then suddenly the thermostat opened with hot coolant causing an instant change in temp to the rubber. Sudden expansion on a contracted frozen hose, Kinda like fixing dents by heating then putting dry ice on it. I'm still curious about the oil light though.

I'll be just toping off the coolant with some mopar stuff at the dealership for now, but I'll be doing my new turbo a few days after that, so I'll be flushing the entire system and refiling with some good 50/50 coolant. Any suggestions on a good brand to buy? Or should I just get the subaru stuff from a dealer or something?

I had the same problem coolant spraying all over the engine from that upper hose. Only thing different though was I was driving in really hot weather on the highway.

My check engine light came on too and then all of a sudden I hear some kind of knocking noise. When I heard that my heart sunk cause I knew what that was, spun rod bearing and all the coolant was mixed with the oil too when I checked it.

I guess your fine since you caught it before it did any major damage to the engine like mine.

Ya it's a good thing too, or I would have been forced to spend way too much money on a 2.2L stroker and some cams.

So im starting to wonder if I wasn't just seeing the amber bleed through from the ABS light. I have an ABS switch that i had turned off, and when the ABS light is on, you can kind of see orange through the oil light. It all happened so fast that It may very well have been the orange bleeding through. It was dawn and there was quite a bit of glare on the gauge cluster. It is possible that the oil light never came on. My oil level is the same as it was a week ago when I checked it. I'm just hoping there wasn't any damage. After reading the faqs I think I'll just pick up some subaru 50/50 coolant.

Hello fellow iowan! Sorry to hear about your problems.

Sounds to me like you reacted in time to prevent any damage, kudos to you for that.
About a decade ago, i had a similar incident and wasn't so quick to react, as I wasn't as mechanically minded then. That eclipse stayed stationary for 4 years before a friend took it for parts.

I hear you on the cold, this weather sucks.

My oil light also came on when my upper radiator hose blew. I don't think you were mistaken. The connector for the oil pressure sensor is almost directly parallel to the radiator hose so when coolant is sprayed the connector will, in most cases, be completely doused with coolant. The coolant then simulates ground on the connector and the light goes on. So if you find that the oil light doesn't go out try cleaning the connector before anything else.
