Default Help! Very Frustrated With 99 RS

ok the car is a 99 rs impreza, it just had the mass air go out and had to replace it, then it gave me a MAP Sensor CEL, I just now changed it(Yes it has a map sensor, I dont car what you tell me that it dont I just changed it on the passenger side by the strut) no CEL now but it bogs when you try to drive it, it acts like its under a heavy load, backfires and pops from the exhaust badly, and wont rev past 3500rpms, im very angry and frustrated with the car and Im about to just give up an sell it. I need help here please someone, its very stressful because I bought it because I like it so much but if its gonna be so problematic Im not gonna keep it, this all started right with the Mass Air went out

Did you clear and reset the ecu after you changed the sensors? I ask because it sounds like your car is still in limp mode. It may seem like a dumb question since many will assume that you disconnected the battery to change the sensors. I assume nothing...

Ps. Ignore the first reply. Your ecu isn't easily flashed like the new cars...

the bogging and backfiring sounds like a 02 sensor went bad. Thats what mine started doing and I replaced the front one and everything was peaches and cream.

many 1999's are DOHC....

if you are DOHC you have a MAF sensor, not a map sensor.

re-pm me that vin and I'll do some digging for you.

Yep, vin states EJ253 SOHC
NOT the common EJ251 SOHC

vin shows maf sensor part number 22794aa000

map sensor should be located on the intake (at least mine is?)
the typical RS map sensor is not applicable to your vin

the sensors over by the strut tower show: valve duty solenoid and a vacuum sensor
22012aa070 = vacuum sensor. you're calling this the map sensor?

when did you purchase this car?

I'm assuming you are not the original owner?

Regardless,
your symptoms point to a bad maf or a bad front 02 sensor

but if you are positive your engine has been swapped, it could be the ECU causing these issues.

bought the car from honda as is about a month ago, like I said it ran fine until the MAF went out and I bought a maf from 99 forester to replace it. So what should I do at this point then?

This is what I have been thinking all along for Roy, I don't think the ECU is causing the problems, since it appears to be a 98 DOHC which was also MAF, but beyond that its just the block and heads that were swapped. Intake manifold and all the wiring and such remained untouched, I think lol...
