Default Very Loud Ticking noise

So I just picked up an 01' RS with 113K Miles.

Well the engine has a very loud ticking noise coming from the engine when the car is running. I had a friend who works on race cars (drag) come over and look at it with me.

He doesnt know much about subaru engines, and says it sounds like a lifter or rocker to him.

Any ideas or opinions, I know its tuff without hearing or seeing the car, just need some advice.

- Mike

Is it like a "knock" or just some ticking?

my 05 RS has a weird little ticking when I hit the throttle. It has had it for over a year now. Still can't figure out what it is.

Does the ticking go away after the car runs for a couple of minutes, or is it constantly there? I know the pulleys/tensioners on our timing belts have a tendency to go bad and click when the car is cold, but the clicking goes away after 5 to 10 minutes (Depends on the weather.) If the clicking is constantly there, it's prolly something internal like your friend mentioned.

stick a stethoscope(or your ear on a screwdriver) on different places on the engine. Try to see if it's the heads or the block. The lifters in the heads on your 01 tend to be kinda noisy when they need adjustment(pretty easy). If it's in the block, that may be a tad more expensive. Does it happen at a certain time? right at startup? only when cold/warm? does it go away? does it come back? on the 2nd tuesday of the month when the bells ring?

Default bet it is the tensioner for timing belt

This sounds like my 04 Impreza - the tensioner begins to contact the block. Louder when you first start the (cold) engine, less loud when fully warmed up. They replaced mine at 99,000 when I had the timing belt replaced - under extended warranty thank goodness. I still have the old tensioner on the shelf in the garage, and you can see where it was constantly hitting the block (but a very small area).

I will check it out this weekend and see if the ticking goes away when it warms up.

I will also look at the tensioneer and see if its hitting

Some people think the accessory belts are the timing belt and the a/c pulley is the timing belt pulley. Just want to clarify that the timing belt is under the black plastic covers on the front of the engine. You probably know that, but just in case.

Well I started the car last night (cold) and the noise was very loud, but I notice if I press the gas in, as soon as the car begins to rev the noise goes away.

Does this help at all?

thats a typical suby sound just piston slap. most of the 00-04 legys and ob's and some imprezas seem to make it. dont worry about it.

A loud ticking noise is most likey just the valve contacting the lifter/rocker. It gets especially bad with the SOHC 2.5L as they did not use hydralic lifters. You probally just need to have your Valve lash adjusted back to spec which can be a pain especially on your drivers side. Even when they are adjusted properly there is still a ticking noise, it's just a downside to the design Subaru chose to use. Also it could be your timing belt tensioner it uses hydralic pressure to keep tension but as it wears the tensioner develops slop which can cause it to move making a ticking noise.
