Default starting problem

My friends 2.2L Impreza will sometimes not start, but after 10 minutes it will sometimes start. It has full power but will not turn over. When she turns the ignition there is one click and then nothing.

My guess that it probably is the starter or the solenoid, but I want to confirm before I tell her to get a new starter.

Can anyone confirm or give me advice on how to know for sure.

Thanks

I think autozone or the like can check it. Not very hard to pull out. If you replace it and it still doesn't work you can always take it back. Not the easiest way to diagnose a problem, but it does work in a pinch.

it is most likely the starter ehich comes with the solenoid but could also just be a bad cable. And parts stores dont allow you to return electrical parts that have been installed.
