Default Rumor: Ford bringing a Euro Van to Chicago Auto Show?

Quote:
Rumor has it that Ford will bringing a European model over to the Chicago Auto Show which will go on sale in the U.S. a year later. But donít get too excited because itís not the Ford Ka or the Ford Mondeo, or even the Ford S-Max.

According to TheCarConnection, Ford is expected to introduce the Transit Connect to the North American market at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show in February. While Ford itself has not confirmed anything, sources say that the Transit Connect will be sold in the U.S. as a 2009 model and will come from FoMoCoís plant in Turkey.

The Ford Transit Connect, which will be pitched as Dodge Sprinter rival, is a front-wheel-drive can powered by a four-cylinder engine.
Sales are expected to start in the fall.

I'm not sure that Ford should be focusing on competing with the Dodge Sprinter. They should spend the time on improving the cars they have that sell.

"front-wheel-drive can"

I think what Ford is trying to do is snag some easy sales and REPLACE the Dodge Sprinter. Now that Mercedes no longer owns Dodge the future of the rebadged Mercedes van is extremely uncertain.

this cannot compete with the Sprinter.
Sprinter's competitor in Europe is just Transit.
I believe that Transit connect is based on the Focus chassis, so it's only competitor is HHR panel.

Indeed. I missed the "Connect" part and was thinking of the regular Transit - had no idea the old Escort Van is now a Transit Connect.

An obvious opportunity here for fleets to downsize the discontinued Freestar minivan to something more efficient.

For the right applications this will be better than the Sprinter. Specifically, small capacity urban delivery vehicle, independent service contractors (plumbing, electrical, etc.). Make it a diesel, equip it very bare bones (options for better, of course), price it low, and market it to small businesses.

Right now the only comparable options in the US in this size class are the HHR and minivans. This will be far more workmanlike.

I meant to say it was just the name Transit, without "Connect" part.
