Default EvoScan/StiScan with Cobb APv1 cable

Anyone used the Evoscan software with a Cobb AP v1 cable? Been trying to get this to work but haven't had any luck. Before I buy the $80 "sure thing" I want to make sure that I can't use the Cobb cable.

Thanks!

Derek

If you have to pay for the logger, then likely it isn't open source like Ecuexplorer or Enginuity's logger (and hence the name of this sub-forum). I've seen the posts for Evoscan and I would be leary about paying someone $20 to beta test their logger.

What posts are those? I did a couple of searches and found nothing bad before I decided to go with it. In fact, a couple of people recommended it on the ecuExplorer sticky thread. Also, I wanted to read engine trouble codes, and this program does that.

Ecuexplorer would not run on the Cobb cable either, event though it should. I tried the most up to date version of the software I could find, but to no avail.

Enginuity worked great with the cable, but doesn't read the trouble codes (CEL's), or at least I couldn't get it to. I have some logs generated and I am still fiddling with it, but right now I have a CEL so that's a concern to me. Yes, I could get it read somewhere, but since I am looking into ECU tuning, I thought I would get something that would do everything I needed.

If you have some posts that I should read with problems people have had with Evoscan, let me know. I don't mind eating the cost if I find out it's a crappy program now, rather than later when it malfunctions.

Otherwise, I can repost in the main forum concerning the cable working, if it doesn't fit in this sub forum...

The first that I've heard of EvoScan/StiScan as it is relates to Subarus was those same posts you read (from a guy who joined in Jan 08) and some on openecu (probably the same guy). Reading through them, the impression I got was that it was a big list of features (like the ability to read ABS module, etc.) that would supposedly be supported in the future and giving you the privilege of paying $20 so you can beta test the current version, which doesn't have many of the features that were listed for Subarus. Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like someone trying to milk some cash out of the public. He even says in one post that the reason he started the project was that he tried many of the other loggers and they all froze and crashed.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case, but it seems that the program has worked well for a lot of people in the Evo community, so I imagine that if it doesn't already offer the same features for Subarus, it soon will.

So far the program seems fully featured to me, as far as the interface goes. But, it is still heavily geared towards the Evo in appearance.

I guess I'll see.

From openecu, this is what made me leary:
Quote:
I was looking around for a decent logger, and the only ones I could find, they just kept crashing or they were really annoying to use and wouldn't connect very well. So I am building a Subaru logger that will connect all the time with all the awesome datalogger parameters. If you have any suggestions for my project? or information on the protocols for different subarus? let me know, and I already know about the SSM1 and SSM2 protocols. And I would like to know more SSM1 vehicle memory locations please send them.
Quote:
1) StiScan Registration will be $25USD
- this will allow me to purchase expensive third party charting and gauge controls to make this the best looking and best functioning datalogger around.
and all the "awesome data logging parameters" shown in the screenshot are the standard SSM parameters. If you feel you have to pay for a logger, Ecuedit would probably be a better choice as far as I can tell. Personally, if you need to read codes, I would just get a handheld obdii scanner.

Yeah, I went back and looked it up on openecu after you posted.

Hopefully it doesn't take him long to make it work like it did for the Evo's. I didn't even pay attention to the dates, it looks like he i just getting started.

Oh well.

Thanks!

Hi I am the developer of evoscan...

whats a Cobb AP v1 cable? is that like a tactrix cable?

I thought it would be better for subaru peeps, if they had ONE cable that worked on SSMI and SSMII and also did subaru ecuflash reflashing.. The cables are being assembled this week. And will be available after the Evoscan v2.1 beta testing.
And its also that this same cable also works on Mitsubishi 1989->2005 and does evo ecuflash reflashing. To be honest if someone had this available before I started, I would have bought one.. no questions.. its the cheapest option around as far as cables and decent software goes. peoples time is worth more than $25 trying to install programs that may or may not work.

The evoscan software is popular because the UI is well designed. And easy for newbies. And evoscan works well for in-car PCs with cheap 7" touch screens for the gauges.

Only the unreleased EvoScan v2.1 works on subarus.. I have 10 subaru people beta testing it at the moment.. so it will work, no doubts there.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, the Cobb APv1 cable should be similar to a tactrix cable, as far as I know. I can get it to work with Enginuity, but not with Ecuexplorer or STIScan. This is just trying to get the logging functionality to work.

I purchased the STIScan program already, so does that mean I have v2.1 that should work with Subaru's, or do I have to wait? The interface is nice, and it appears to allow you to select the cable type and what car you have, however those areas are greyed out and I am unable to select them. I assumed this was because it did not detect the Cobb cable on the serial port.

Either way, I like the interface and the program features that are mentioned (that I hope I will be able to soon use), and I don't mind buying a cable I know for a fact will work, but I would rather use one that I already have that should work.

Still doesn't work with the Cobb AP v1 cable. I probably need to pick up a tactrix cable, but I thought they were made the same.

They released the Evoscan 2.1 I am testing it as we speak. I ll post after I figure out how to use it. My friend has an 11 sec Evo and he do all his logs with this program, lets see how good it works on Subys.

I just bought EvoScan v2.2 last night and am using a tactrix cable. I cannot make it work. I've tried all the options and it just won't connect to my ECU. My ECU is flashed with a custom stage 1 setup. I wonder if this matters.

Anyone out there successfully use EvoScan v2.2 with a WRX and a tactrix cable? If so, how? Please help! I want some custom gauges on my carPC cuzz I'm a stats-whore.

Hi,
I was successful connecting to a 2000 JDM Forester St/b and datalogging went well. I used the Tactrix Openport 1.3U (Universal Cables) and after ticking the SUbaru checkbox and selecting SSMII in the Select ECU dropdown menu, was up and running.
What year is your WRX? Tactrix works for 1999 onwards. For pre-1999, try use the SSMI available at the same site. Hope this helps.

Mine's a 2004 WRX (USDM) with a Subaru openport 1.3 cable, not the 1.3U. I guess maybe it requires that cable, but the programmer guy for EvoScan says it should work with my tactrix cable too. I don't know what the problem is but he wants me to give him a few logs using portmon and Enginuity. I'll update this if I get it to work. Otherwise I might try to get a 1.3U cable instead of my subaru-specific 1.3, sigh...
