Default stage 1, stage 2 ?

what would warrant an ecu upgrade and tune. ieg, stage 1 = cat back, cold air intake?. ieg, stage 2 = headers, hi-flow cat, cat back, lightweight pullys?. etc etc.... whats a good rule of thumb. also what would be the best, piggy back ecu, or new ecu?

none. All that "staging" BS is just marketing jibberish. For an N/A car you can go without an ecu tune even after all the bolt-ons you can think of have been installed...some even run more aggressive cams without it.

You can make more power with the ecu tuned on a DYNO, from adding just a catback all the way up to however wild you want to get. Of course, the rule of thumb is the more parts you add, the more gains you can get from that one dyno tune.

I think yours can be tuned using OpenECU or one of those software that has a free license and no need for a piggyback. If you really want a piggyback, Emanage & PP6 are probably the 2 most popular ones right now.

I think Ispeed still does ECU reflashes, but you'll need to contact them for your particular application.

"Stages" are for 16 year old high school drop outs with nothing better to do than name things like "stages"...

Jumping on the ignorance bandwagon here...

I thought only WRX's and STi's had reflashable ECU's until MY 08 where they finally used a reflashable ECU for the non-WRX's.

I'm open for correction on that of course.

so stages are just bs i guess or for turbo's. so just bolt on some stuff and get it retuned on a dyno? can it be retuned without buying an aftermarket ecu?

If your local tuner supports openECU, I think your 04 can be tuned with it. Their site just released the 2.5i/RS maps I think... Do a search for the thread here in this forum.

05+ RS/I's have a 32bit ECU that can in fact be reflashed using opensource software and a tatrix cable.

Not sure on your MY 04 but I bit if you do some searching over at the opensource forum you should find an answer
