Default USDM Hyundai Genesis Sedan with 368HP V8 and 6spd ZF automatic

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/au...igenesisf34500

Quote:
There are only two production cars in the world with a Lexicon-branded audio system. One is the $360,000 Rolls Royce Phantom; the other is the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The Genesis will not cost $360,000. In fact, it will start below $30,000 when it goes on sale this summer.

For that bargain price, you'll get a near-luxury sedan with all the value you would expect in a Hyundai. Base models will use a 3.3-liter V6 that delivers 268 horsepower and 233 pound-feet of torque, while the midrange Genesis gets a 3.8-liter V6 rated at 290 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. Both use a standard six-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

Competing with more expensive European sedans takes more than a V6, so the top-of-the-line Genesis will offer Hyundai's first-ever V8. The new 4.6-liter engine generates an impressive 368 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque, and uses the same ZF six-speed automatic found in many BMW and Jaguar sedans. Hyundai says the combination is enough to get the V8 Genesis from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds running on regular unleaded gas.

A new rear-wheel-drive chassis helps deliver all that power to the ground. It gets help from front and rear suspensions that use a sophisticated five-link design and the car's 53/47 front-to-rear weight distribution. Hyundai also says that the use of high-tensile steel gives the Genesis higher torsional rigidity and a lighter structure than the BMW 5 Series.
Hyundai is hoping to give its new flagship sedan an even bigger boost in the cachet department by offering high-end options similar to that of more expensive European sport sedans. In addition to the 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, the Hyundai Genesis will offer adaptive xenon headlights, heated and cooled front seats, iPod and USB audio inputs, adaptive cruise control, a factory HD Radio receiver and even reflective leather on the steering wheel to keep it cool in direct sunlight.

With a wheelbase of 115.6 inches, the Genesis has more room between the wheels than both the Infiniti M and Lexus GS sedans. It's also roughly 2 inches wider, so interior passenger space should be generous. There's the usual array of front, side and side curtain airbags along with electronic active head restraints, a feature Hyundai points out is only offered on select BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz models.

As predicted, we don't have to worry about the Bentley rip off emblem or the odd plastic piece in the front. I'm not too excited about the design inside and out, but I'm sure in person it will look a lot more expensive than it actually is. The engine and the tranny are right up there with the very best of the competition, and so is the chassis, at least on paper.

i think theyll have a hit on theyre hands mainly because it allows people who dont have enough money to buy a 5 series or E class to have a car thats as good or better than those, but for quite a bit less money. i know if i were looking into a luxury car id be sure to look at this, hyundai definitely isnt the same crappy carmaker they were a few years ago, theyve stepped theyre game up bigtime.

I'm pretty impressed with the hp ratings of the 3.3-liter V-6 and 4.6-liter V-8 engines. Torque is decent enough, especially with an engine a lot smaller than those of its competitors but with comparable hp.

Actually I'd disagree. if you are looking at a 5 series it usually means you have 5 series money. You won't be buying a Hyundai. Where I see Hyundai stealing sales is from the top of the line Accord, Camry and Passat trims. Why would I buy a loaded version of one of those when I can have something that is more luxurious for the same price?

It's a poor man's e500, nothing wrong with that. I hope they make a poor man's Aston Martin, sign me up.

I think they have a very handsome car there, as I mentioned before in it's Asian release thread. I like that it takes design cues from many current luxury vehicles without directly ripping them off. The same can't be said for a lot of current designers .

Very excited about the Coupe version of this bad boy. Hyundai is really picking up their game.

Hyundaiís Genesis takes on luxury rivals

When most of us think rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan we think of the usual German suspects. But Hyundai plans to shake things up a bit with the debut of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis at the Detroit Motor Show next week. Itís expected that the Korean-made Genesis will hit the US sometime later this year with a price tag that stays below the magic $30,000 mark.

Donít be quick to write off the Genesis just because itís a Hyundai - Hyundais of recent times often have features that seem impossible for their relatively tiny price tags. The Genesis will offer features found only in the top of the line German marques as options - active front head restraints, stability control, 8 airbags, heated/cooled seats, adaptive headlamps, a navigation system, satellite radio and many others. There isnít much word on the interior but according to Hyundai cabin space is larger than an E-class and a BMW 7-series and can even boast a leather dashboard.

From the outside, the car looks very un-Hyundai like and if you didnít see the badge you might be forgiven for thinking it was something a little more expensive. Its clean lines and new grill give us an idea of Hyundaiís new design direction, and most significant of all is the lack of a Hyundai badge on the front. This suggests to us that even Hyundai is aware of the brand snobbery it is likely to suffer at the hands of fickle customers.

The Genesis will come in sedan form first and then later as a coupe, with a choice of three engines ranging from the 3.3L to a 4.6L Tau V8, as well as a 3.8L model in the middle. The V8 will put out around 368hp and 440Nm (324lb.ft.) of torque through a ZF 6-speed auto, while the V6 models will be stuck with Aisin 6-speed autos. With almost 370hp, Hyundai expects the top of the line model to hit 60 miles in well under 6 seconds although at this point no one has tested this figure.
Ultimately, its major German competitors are priced $20,000 to $50,000 more than the Genesis, and the idea of a budget luxury car seems almost contradictory to many people so only time will tell if this was a smart move from Hyundai and whether the budget-luxury segment can carve a larger market share for itself.

you're just paying for the name with those cars you mentioned. With Hyundai, they sell us for the price they just need to build their next car IMHO. I'll be looking at the V6 model myself!

The interior is a little non-descript but I bet their iDrive knob thingy is better than BMW's, and at least you don't have to lean forward to use it like you do on the Infiniti.

I think domestic sedans will continue to suffer. My parents have had Fords and Buicks for years (they're retired, it's allowed) but recently bought an Azera and are very happy with it.

Isn't the ZF 6-speed auto the same unit used in high end luxury vehicles, such as the Jaguar XK-R?

Yes, and most of BMW's line up uses the ZF 6-speed auto as well.

Exactly. Not only is it cheaper than anything the domestics make while being a lot more luxurious, it's also arguably more reliable. People will still buy domestics, but this will lure away a lot of people who are getting fed up with the domestics but can't afford a BMW or Mercedes.

Yes, but at least they are using some of the same parts used in high end vehicles, most of us can't afford - and charging something that many of us now can afford.

First Huyundai I would ever consider. They just need to get thier interior design a bit less Toyota-like. Also, way to rip the RL, 760i, and Ls460 exterior styling Hyundai.

Eh, I guess they have to skimp somewhere..

Or else if they design something themselves, you might get stuff like this
