Default Lincoln to become global luxury brand

Quote:
Lincoln to become global luxury brand

If Americaís luxury brands want to be around in years to come they need to expand sales overseas and become more relevant in a global context. Cadillac has made it clear that it wants a big slice of the international market. Itís already launched several models in the Middle-East and Europe and next year the brand will be launched as far away as Australia. Fordís Lincoln brand, on the other hand, is barely acknowledged in markets outside of North America but this may soon change according to recent comments from Ford boss Alan Mulally.

Lincoln is already sold in the Middle-East but Mulally apparently wants the brand launched in Europe and Asia as well. During a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport, a Ford official told reporters that Lincoln isnít targeting top level luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW in Western Europe. Instead it sees itself moving into new markets like Eastern Europe, Russia and China, where most brands are still on a level playing field.

One major problem for Lincoln is its lack of a RWD lineup. If Ford is serious about competing with Europeís luxury brands it will need to add more RWD models in Lincolnís lineup and perhaps even a diesel. Lincoln already revealed the RWD MKR concept at last yearís Detroit Auto Show and recently Fordís group vice-president in charge of global product development, Derrick Kuzak, admitted there is a RWD Lincoln model in the works. Still, it will take several years before the Lincoln brand becomes a household name in countries outside of North America and tough competition from the established European marques as well as a new and improved Cadillac could make it take even longer.

They should look into making Linclon a TRUE luxury brand in the US before they waste all this time and energy into introducing it globally.

FoMoCo, here' a hint: LOOK AT CADILLAC. They redesigned their entire lineup with good (and unique, not rebadges) RWD cars a few years ago that were competent, and now they are redesigning them again to make them truly world-class.

Right, look to Cadillac for inspiration...your designs are frumpy, always have been. When Lincoln ranked 3rd (behind Porsche and Lexus) in the 2007 JD Powers Initial Quality Study, I wasnt suprised though. 20 years of development makes a damned fine car.

+1.

GM already learned the hard way that slapping a Caddy badge on a crappy FWD car does not a world-class luxury car make. The fact that every single Lincoln car is just an over priced Ford with more gaudy chrome is not going to help it at all.

Will Lincoln be a bargain alternative in European markets? The quality of interior between a Lincoln and say a BMW or Mercedes is huge.

Lincoln needs to get rid of the disgusting grille on their current vehicles before even thinking about expanding their market.
