Question Clutch Shudder???

I just got my '02 WRX abou a week ago, so I drove it a lot, and got 1,000 miles on it. So i know for later, when should I expect a shuddering clutch?

Heaven forbid! Do not EXPECT a shuddering clutch! Not everyone has it. But since you asked, my MY00 RS started at 4500 miles and my WRX started at 3200 miles. I think it might be me...

Default possible cause?

Has any one check their clutch master cylinder fluid level? or possiblly replace them with new fluid? Will it give a better clutch feels? Will the OEM carpeting interfere with the clutch travel??
I consider myself a potential buyer for a WRX wagon, but untill all this transmission hype all solved in the pilot production. I will just go for a RSX type-S....

Default Pure speculation . . .

I am NOT an expert on clutches. So, this may be b.s., or not applicable to the WRX. . . I have read about other vehicles having similar clutch shudder problems. One explanation offered for Miatas was something like this. Heat from driving (even under normal conditions) causes the clutch disc to warp as it cools when the car is parked. Subsequently, when the vehicle is driven a shudder is experienced until the disc is heated up and forced to "unwarp" through use. Trying to correlate drive time (heat) and parked time (cooling) with the shudder may support or dismiss this notion.

A second explanation was related to defective fly wheels.

I hope this helps. Appologies in advance if it is all crap.

Onebean, that sounds about right to me. I've got 14k and started getting the shudder in 1st gear, but only when the car is cold, and only once in a while (especially mornings). After it warms up everything seems fine.

I started getting the clutch shudder on cold mornings at 14K miles. It is now is so horrible that it feels like the clutch is going to launch itself out of the bell housing. Once it warms up the shudder is just slightly there. I know something like the flywheel, clutch disc or pressure plate is warped. I am very easy on the clutch and never abused it. My WRX is a daily driver only. Oh, but I do have a SCCA decal on it. I wonder if I'll be denied warrantee service because of my "decal". You know, its been abused. Just look at the decal. He must be racing this car!
If the shudder keeps up its going in and hopefully Carter in Seattle will warrantee this POS clutch chatter. I have been buying cars since 1971 and never had a car have this kind of problem. What is interesting is that I am not alone. Dozens of others complain of the same issue.
Seems to me that for the amount of WRX imported and sold (18K)
the percentage of problems is quite high.

My WRX with the cold start-up clutch shudder is going in a week from today to Carter in Seattle.
The service rep asked the same questions they always ask.
1. Did you buy it from us?
2. Is it modified?

I am also going to have them check the buzzing right front speaker.
I don't think at 45 years old my National Public radio (NPR) and Tom leycis (sp) radio stations caused the buzzing speaker at normal listening volumes?
I keep ya posted on what happens.

hey Greg,

Let us know how the dealer deal with it. My clutch does that too. Shudders in the morning when it's cold. and after driving awhile..the shuddering is gone. I only have 1500 miles on it and it's doing that already. but i DID get the car with 133 miles on it.

Chaplins shotgunned (clutch, driven, TOB, flywheel) my RS clutch due to cold shudder, stating the cause as a defective pressure plate.

This has been a problem afflicting SUbarus for years over many models and countries. Just ask the guys in the UK about it.

The Acura is probably a better bet for a trouble free car. JD Powers ranked Acura #1 in 2000 in its initial quality survey, the Impreza was 185th of 191. Having said that, the Acura name slipped to 10th place in 2001 because of production problems in the new MDX. So I would expect the RSX to have a few glitches this year also. I'm going to wait a year and reevaluate RSX, Matrix, and Impreza (still haven't decided if I need the WRX or is the TS better value). Might even consider the RAV 4 if Toyota puts a few more ponies under the hood.

And as Glenn pointed out, shuddering clutches, (also somewhat fragile trannys) have been a problem for years. Don't expect that to change until the 6 speed comes out.

Default Yup Shudder

I get it in my 280Z, My 2001 Legacy, and my 2002WRX. It always occurs when the clutches are cold on the Subies and when the clutch is hot on the 280Z. I am almost certain I know what it is.

When it is very damp it gets worse on the Subies so I beleive it is condensation or moisture on the discs from being parked cold.

The Z is 26years old and probably has a leaky rear main seal so oil is probably doing the damage on that one.

Just my correlation...I am not worried because all cars have shown this too me at one point or another.

Same here @ 13500...What does this mean to the tranny for the few times it does it in a week?? I have an appointment in a week with the dealer, to check it out and made them aware of it 3 weeks ago.
