Odd CEL light problem

Hi All
I have a 2000 Impreza and the darn CEL comes on regularly for the pesky emissions code. This turns out to be a gas cap loose usually but not in my case...read further!
See the CEL comes on EVERY TIME I let the gas get close to 1/4 full. If I fill-up at 1/2 a tank...no problem and no CEL ever. Ive been "testing" this theory for about two months now. Of course Ive changed fuel caps...1st using the expensive dealer one ...then trying the NAPA Stant cap...and then going back to the dealer cap. No change in behavior...my question is why would it do this?? Anyone think they have an answer. I love the car but I hate CEL's almost as much as I hate oil leaks!!

I read a post on here about someone getting a CEL pertaining to emissions and they thought it was the cap also, so they tried a new OEM cap from Subaru, then an aftermarket quality cap, probably something similar to the NAPA cap you tried and then gave up. They went on to say that they were @ WalMart picking up some new wiper blades and there were some cheap gas caps right next to the blades so they bought one since it couldnt hurt to try and it fixed it. That was a few weeks ago that i read that... ill see if I can find the post again.

I wasnt completely accurate.. the caps he tried were all from the junkyard.. Subaru caps i guess? anyway, heres the thread, last post was the one I was referring too but maybe some others will help, too. also, next time you might find answers/fixes faster by trying a search of the forum before you post your own question on a new thread. hope that helps.
