Default Anyone tow a car trailer with their Legacy ?

I'm thinking about picking up a trailer for my 98 Legacy L wagon... I would like to be able to tow my Impreza to and from shows and whatnot....

Its not that heavy, what do you guys think ???

It will pull it, but IMO its not gonna do it safely. If you try it upgrade at least your brake pads and reduce the tongue weight as much as possible.

If you're not familiar with one of the most basic terms/concepts associated with setting up a tow vehicle and trailer, I highly suggest you stop now and do some research before you get yourself into trouble.

I wouldn't try to tow 4000lbs of impreza and trailer with a Legacy. That's just not within what the car should do.

I'd say no, my Baja hitch is only rated for 2400lbs. I wanted to do the same thing.

Most unibody cars are rated for 2500-3000lbs of towing anyway...I don't think you'll be able to tow a car+trailer with it.

Better to just get a cheap tow vehicle if you're set on towing the Imp...

Yeah, get a used truck. The market on those is flooded, so I bet you could get a decent one cheaply.

yea definately not going to happen.....dependinng on what trailer you are talking about....some full car trailers way up to 2-3000 lbs alone....add nearly 3000 more and you are looking at 5-6000 lbs......a full size truck is needed for that.....now if you plan on using a dolly and disconnecting the driveshaft everytime you want to tow then that may be a different story, but i still dont see that being very good for the tranny at all nor would it be easy for that motor to pull that kind of load

bummer... With diesel prices these days its not even worth getting one. And gass mileage on big ol V8's is quite the suck

I guess I will end up just driving her to shows

what are you guys using to tow with ?

Subaru rated my 99 Legacy GT (with the 2.5 litre motor) max. reccomended towing capacity at 2,500 Lbs. Your Subaru Legacy L Wagon (with the 2.2 litre motor) is likely rated for far less. A first generation Impreza has to weigh something in the neighborhood of ~ 2,800 Lbs. Add in the weight of the trailer and you are over 3,000 Lbs.

Yes you COULD tow your Impreza with your Legacy for short distances. However nobody on this board would really reccomend it.

Jack (the Factory Five Cobra guy) and "KC" (on the "New England forums") both do a fair amount of trailer towing. Pretty much any long-bed pickup with a rated towing capacity of ~5,000 lbs, electric towing brakes, and a class III frame mounted Hitch would be well suited for the job.

Subarus are meant to be driven. Dont make yours a "trailer queen".

Well, if it's that important, buy a cheap old beater truck for the job.

Gas mileage on anything (including a 2.2L Legacy ) is going to suck while towing. Maybe you can get a V6 truck?

Lots of experience towing with my 2001 legacy 2.5 GT 5spd. Wife and I race sailboats we have a 1400lb 20ft racing boat with trailer and gear tips it around 2100lbs towing with a very low profile - top of the boat is about two feet taller than the Subaru roof line- boat it's self is fairly areodynamic. Going ultra light no extra bodies or gear keeping to around 2000lbs max the legacy tows well - drives well - stops OK but in 80+ degree heat the radiator is not big enough engine warms up on slight climbs. A friend as an Impreza with the 2.2 which tows the same boat - he's done the Grapevine at 35mpg again going as light as possible one person in the car minimal gear etc 1800-2000lbs max. No way would either engine haul more than 2500lbs in a safe manner.

Gas milege with my small 600lb 16foot sailboat was around 25mpg with the 5spd 2.5 legacy gt. The Gas milege with the 20ft 2000lb boat is around 19mpg.

with reference to the price of diesel comment, My friend has a 93 chevy duramax which is beat to **** and still gets 18mpg consistently compaired to his 07 2500HD gasoline which on a good day might pull 10mpg.
