Have a Nice Day? New Model RS Update: Uh oh...

My cousin took his 2 week old 2002 BRP RS up to the sierras this weekend...

He showed up today to wash is car (It snowed btw) and guess what... Rock dings EVERYWHERE! The front end is like it was sand blasted! Headlights, radiator, everything... You drop the hood and sand starts falling out from everywhere
But, from a large rock ding on the windshield, a foot long crack emerged friday night after the car was out in freezing cold temps

So, how can the rock dings be fixed without a total repaint? And how much will the windshield cost, and is it covered by insurance? (Its on the driver side, the crack) And will it cause his insurance to go up if he does use it?

But in the good news, he said the car was supurb in all that snow, and plowed through 6 inches of snow like nothing. And he also praised the climate system in the car on how well it works.

Oh, and doesn anyone have any pics of the whole air intake system and what encorporates the silencer and any pics of a K+N drop-in install? (Can be old RS too) Looked pretty easy to do, but theres alot of wierd aparently useless pipes in there...

And on another side note, my friends bro took his Blue Auto Rex wagon on some twisties near mount hamilton and did some drifts and fun driving Aparently the Auto is much improved after break in as well.

On the rock chips:
I found several places in my area (Minneapolis) that repaired paint chips. They squeegee the paint over the chips, wait a few minutes to dry, then go over everything with a polishing compound. The results aren't factory but if you squint a little it looks pretty good. Better than letting them rust.

Hey, if they're doing it in Minnesota, somebody is doing it in California.

Unhappy

I sympathize, I caught a rock in the windshield Monday AM. The good news - it is available. Insurance will cover it under comprehensive but there is usually a deductable which some glass installers will work with you on.

Cool, Placerville. Highway 49 is my "fun run" road

Anyway, I think he has a high deductable... like $500...

Kosta,

How are you feeling about the power of the new RS? With the WRX being out of my pricerange, I am pretty curious.

I'll be shopping for a fun, under $20k sedan in the spring. The '02 RS, and the upcoming '02 Sentra SE-R Spec-V are the front runners right now.

The 02 RS is in its own class. No other sedan for under $20,000 can touch it.

Welcome to the world of crappy Subbie paint. Though I have to say I was up there too and didn't have any of those problems. I wouldn't bother with fixing the chips (and wait for the swirls when he washes it) unless he is going to get a quality paint job. It will just happen again.
BTW, even better than 49 is the run on county roads cutting through from 88 just west of Kirkwood and popping out at placerville.

To those wanting advice about the new RS, I say save some dough and either get an OBS, WRX (if you can afford it), or the new Nissan Spec V. In my opinion, the RS is a poser. Everyone is gonna mistake you for a WRX so be prepared to race a lot. And the sooby paint, it sucks!

I'm sure the SE-R Spec-V is gonna put a HUGE damper on RS sales. It will be cheaper and much faster, and supposedly handles like a Type-R.

Why the hell did you by a 2002 RS if you think it is a poser?

purduealum91,
What does your comment vaguely have to do with his post? BTW, those other subbies will have the same cheap paint too.
Is your RS for sale? or are you proud to be one of us RS owning posers?

...And then there are those of us who aren't into street racing. Say what you want, purduealum, but I'm totally happy with my RS. I wanted something that's fun to drive, and that's exactly what I got. I don't feel the need to impress anyone else.

Why is the RS a poser?!?!? Because it is not THE fastest car on the road?!?!? I guess everything that is not a Mclaren F1 is a poser...

The RS is quick.
The RS handle well.
The RS has a nice tight chassis.
It is AWD.
It is under 20k
Do you want me to go on?

It is not the WRX but it is no poser.

And check out Andres 1/4 posting in the NA tech forum. He's built an NA RS that can match a stock WRX for performance, and I'm not just talking 1/4 mile. Can you say featherweight?

I think I'd actually seriously consider the SE-R Spec V or SVT Focus over the RS. They aren't AWD, but in dry weather they should have superior speed and handling. As much as I hate FWD...

sporin: Since I cant drive it, I can only go by what I noticed... Its not as fast as the rex of course, but for the first 1/2 second the extra torque of the 2.5l is very notiable compaired to the rex before the Turbo spools...

My cousin says it feels a little slower than his 240, but thats probably cause of the AWD and the fact the 240 had even more torque... But it could be just that it "feels" slower and actually is quicker (cause i rides so well )

The big thing is though that the K+N filter for $40 looks really easy to install, and on subaruparts.com you can get the 20mm wrx rear Sway bar for $81!!! Im going to get the K+N for his birthday, and we will see how it runs after that and an ECU reset (his B-Day is close to the end of may)

For everyone else...

The RS is no poser. And it has ALOT to compete with the Spec-V and SVT besides the AWD... Its far better built and more relaible than the focus, and the driving position cant be beat (Had a rental focus, very unimpressed) and the Sentra has a VERY low roof line and poor visibility compaired to the RS.
As we all know here (Club-Si disagrees), the RS is faster than the Si, and that means it should put up good numbers vs. the Spec-V and SVT (which are on my list too).

But the big thing to me is that the SVT will be a limited run car (probably around 1000) and the same with the spec-V (the standard SE-R probably quite a few more) and both will carry mark ups as well as hard-to-get status...
Meanwhile, I can go right now and order a new RS for near-if-not invoice price That actually puts it cheaper than those cars for me...

But, after driving around in FWD cars all my life... Im SOOOOO tired of it! Thats the big thing that the RS has above those cars, and the reason why its still my #1 choice.

I have driven both a rs and wrx. The rs feels more powerful than the wrx under 3000rpms. Once the turbo spools up there is no comparison. The wrx does have the edge in handling but that can be changed by adding a bigger sway bar to the rs.
