Default CLEAN your turbo oil screen. Read this.

The oil pipe on the right hand cylinder head is attached with a banjo bolt tht contains an oil filter screen. It requires cleaning with your oil change.

A service buletin came out from Subaru in Oct 2007 about it after turbo failures from oil starvation.

FP found it and posted this warning on their site. They also claim their red and green models require more oiling than stock turbos (and of course BB turbos) and this is even more important to do with these units. (This may explain some of the failures of greens we hear about on here).

Who knew there was one? Apparently there is another one before the oil pipe to the AVCS units also.

Subaru service buletin number 02-97-05 for the AVCS units that came out in Oct 2005

i JUST ruined my green 3 weeks ago because of this, i actually broke the turbine wheel clean off of the shaft!!! and the rear bearing split on one side. took the filter out today and it had sludge in it...what a stupidass idea, i have yet to find a subaru tech that knows anything about it! you are supposed to change the filter everytime you change the oil.

Is the filter necessary? You're supposed to take out the AVCS one... can we just kill the turbo oil filter as well?

can anyone post a picture of EXACTLY where this is? after reading this i will be replacing it, but am not sure of its location. Also, where can the new banjo bolt/filter be purchased?

It is labeled "A" in the diagram. But yeah,..it doesn't exactly show where it is once installed.

So follow the oil tube from the turbo back to the head. There will be a banjo bolt that goes through the tube, and it will be aiming foreward in the car. So the bolt head will be on the firewall side of the passanger head.

Here is a pic I coppied without permission from APSs' site (hope they don't mind) showing their beautiful rotated Garrett twin-scroll setup. I think the metal tube that goes from the top of the back of the head to the top of the turbo is the feed,...and the rubber hose that goes from the side of the turbo to the bottom of the head is the return.

So the bolt we're looking for should be the upper one with the arrow labeled "Supply" in this pic. Do I have that right? Can someone confirm that?

The screen can just be pulled out, cleaned off with brake cleaner, and re-installed. Or left out permanantly.

FP recomends cleaning it every oil change or removing it entirely when using their Green and Red turbos. And you should clean it every couple oil-changes with anything else.

I doubt mine has ever been cleaned,...and my 2004 STI has 77,000 miles on it now. 59,000 of which have been with a TEC 18-G turbo.

im guessing you would get better flow without the screen, but are there any downsides to not having it?

Just remove the screens. There are two more at the AVCS lines at the head. This was an issue with STI's idling low.. Subaru sent out a paper instructing that dealers remove the screens.

And at least for the AVCS lines,..didn't the part number change in mid-2005 to a new bolt that didn't have a screen at all? (Which woould back up that it's OK).

How easy is this to do for someone that is not a mechanic?

I have your basic tools, wrenches..etc.

I've put on my TBE, spec c roof vent, struts..etc

That looks very cramped and doesn't look user friendly...

Thanks,
-Nigel

I just did mine. I dont see how it's possible to get to it w/o removing the turbo.

also... before anyone embarks on this, be sure you have two new copper crush washers. You should not re-use copper crush washers.

Theres no way I would screw with cleaning the filters every oil change(especially the rear). Just TAKE THEM OUT. No real downside, unless you dont change your oil regularly and/or use crappy filters.

I've removed all 3 of my filters awhile back. You don't have to remove the turbo to get to the rear one. It is a pain, but you can get it out with a little finesse. I did mine fine, and I have a SZ55 crammed back there. The filters on the AVCS banjos are super easy and can be taken out in 5 minutes. I also did NOT replace the copper washers, just flipped them around and torqued to spec. I have not had one leak yet.

I think most of the 04 STi's have them, and maybe the 05's. After that, I think they stopped using them. A lot of the Jdm motors have them as well. They can drop and screw up your idle or send that screen in your heads or into the turbo.

can you remove them without an oil change? or is it recommended to do so while changing your oil?

I'm pretty sure that you have to do it with an oil change. Don't quote me on that, but you might be sorry if you end up with 5qts of used oil all over your floor.

I did my three as well, no i did not remove my turbo, just takes some time to get the the one on the back side.

Car idled actually suprisingly better. One of those wow that actually did something? Kinda thing, you wouldn't think they are important to anything from the size except restriction.

I would do it WHILE doing an oil change, to be honest they've been there for awhile, just runem until your next oil change.

There's one banjo bolt with a filter in each head for the AVCS lines, and then an additional one in the passenger side
head for the turbo oil feed lines. So, a total of 3.
