Default Ebay Mufflers all bad???

I've been thinking... are all Ebay mufflers bad? I've been doing some ebay searching and found these...

http://cgi.ebay.ca/Megan-Racing-Univ...QQcmdZViewItem

The seller claims to be T304 stainless steel from Megan Racing. I've heard some of the clips on Youtube with Megan Racing mufflers and they seem to have a deep tone. Has anyone in NASIOC tried these? Or should I just forget about these and go for STi axleback?

Well the bad part about most of the generic mufflers on ebay is the packing material they use; usually it's fiberglass or some other cheap material to do the sound absorption...the problem lies further down the road (maybe 6-12 months or so) when the packing material basically falls apart and you end up with nothing more than a megaphone for your exhaust.

I googled the muffler and this is the site I come up with

http://www.meganracing.com/products/...id=62&catid=45

The site says one year warranty. Maybe it may fail after one year just as you've stated. I for one doesnt want to have a megaphone exhaust as my local authorities don't like loud exhausts.

The second option I may take is STi axleback and fabricate a catback out of it. I haven't heard a stock STi exhaust for a long time, so I can't remember the tone of it. But the ones I've checked on Youtube and the tone seems to be pretty soft. Not sure if its the one I would want.

I'm rolling with an ebay muffler at the moment. It's an OBX and looks exactly like the megan racing one, except with an angled tip. So far it's sounded really good and pretty good with my exhaust setup. Explanation below.

Exhaust setup:
Borla Header
stock cats
muffler shop 2.5" catback
OBX muffler
Thoughts:
Sounded great imo. It had the signature boxer rumble but real deep and angry sounding. Nice volume, not too loud, but not quiet. No rasp. Pretty tight for a can style muffler.

current:
Borla Header
Random Tech custom test pipe w/ 9"(ish) resonator
Muffler shop 2.5" catback
OBX muffler
Thoughts:
Pretty dang loud. I'd like to quiet it down a bit. Tone is still decent. Rumbles still but now it roars. A little rasp, which was to be expected, but not much and it doesn't sound blarey unless at WOT. I like a quiet, tight tone, and this isn't unbearable for me so it must be ok. I'm looking for a prodrive axleback though.

Well, if don't mind experimenting, you can try the Megans and OBX's...but I would try to get a deal on a magnaflow or dynomax or even a flowmaster muffler simply because they're proven to have very durable construction...

You can also try Summit Racing mufflers - sure they're not 100% straight-through (theyre an older turbo-style muffler) but they're an excellent value and provide a very nice tone without being too loud; I lot of domestic guys like it...(blasphemy I know, but for $20 you can't do any worse than the generic chinese stuff).

Build quality is usually the issue with ebay mufflers. By this I mean poor manufacturing, bad welds, and lax tolerances.

In addition there is a big issue with knock offs. So you may not be buying what you think you are. As a side note to that, they are pretty confident that if you buy from them you most likely are not going to determine what material they make the muffler our of so I would guess and lower quality stainless steel is used.

Here's my video of it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh9deVtjji8

Build quality seems to be good, I haven't had any problems with it yet.

I sort of question Megan Racing's quality... I know many people speak pretty highly about their coilovers, but check this out. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1443695

I don't know how much better their mufflers can be... Maybe that DP is just a bad (rotten and moldy) apple, but I think I'll stay away from them.

I do know that ERZ and SSAC parts from Ebay have turned out to be pretty decent.

DjEstatic, did you keep the stock cats and resonator with stock piping? Or did you change anything other than the muffler? Is it a cop magnet?

anickode, that thread also said their Honda lineups are pretty good. So i guess that DP is just one bad apple within that apple orchard.

I still have my stock cats but no resonator. Cops in my area don't seem to mind. There's other cars around here louder than mine and I haven't heard anybody else have any problems.

Do you get the raspy sound with your non-resonated exhaust? The cops around the area I commute in are a bit too concern with noise pollution. So being too loud is an issue for me. But I haven't heard it in person so I cant judge it on a video. But yours sounds awesome Did you change the pipe diameter or kept it stock size?

It's a little raspy at higher RPMs.. The pipe diameter is stock size. The setup I currently have now is just temporary.

How does it sound when its around 3k RPM? I often drive by a local district full of seniors. I don't want my car to scream at them everytime I drive by. I also don't want the cops to be on my ass everytime I try to accelerate What plans do you have?

It's a little loud but not to loud enough to bother anybody. The silencer it comes with keeps it quiet, but I try to use that as little as I can. Right now I'm looking to get a Blitz Nur Spec axle-back and Stromung mid pipe and hopefully get rid of the stock EL header.

Did you grab yours off Ebay or through a site?? Hows the stainless steel acting up right now? I'm trying to go stainless but the local muffler shops I've talked to only does mild steel... Salt on road and mild steel may not be a good combination.

I got it from hopupracing.com. The stainless steel is holding up pretty good.
