Impreza WRX STi Subara screwed up bad!

Hi, I used to own a 2001 RS, the last 2 dr model. I absolutely loved it and had no concerns with it except for the obvious, no turbo. Ive seen the new '08 STI and I think it is absolutely rancid. I was wondering what people might think on this site becasue it seems there are about 50/50 opinions on the web about this car. I really dont understand why Subaru decided to take such a risk with the hatch. I heard they were aiming for their core buyers (Japan) but still, I dont think there is any comaprison as far as looks between the later models and the new one. Oh and does anybody know for sure if they are planning on making a new sedan model?

omg, ANOTHER one of these threads...

Subaru is not taking any "risks" with the 08, they're actually doing the exact opposite. They made it look as generic as possible to please as many people as possible. Just because the enthusiasts don't like it doesn't mean the general public doesn't. The new Impreza 2.5i's have been selling like crazy.

I agree. It's rancid.

Another fail on your part is the use of checkboxes for a single-choice poll when a radio box poll should've been used.

Yeah, that and you should have used years as options instead of versions. Was version 7 the bugeye or the GC?

While I agree with the comment that they made the car look generic, that still doesnt make up for the fact that the car was not really made for the "general public". The car was in fact made for the enthusiast because its not your standard model. Either way the whole line up of the '08's have lost that specific identity that Subaru once had. They are no longer agressive looking and this brings me to the same deal with the EVO X, not only does it look nothing like a "street Rally" car as the company says, but it looks nothing like any of its previous models. They toned it down way too much in order to please the "general public" when it was not necessary. I hate to say it but I would buy an EVO X before the new STI because at least it still looks something like a rally car.

When I say general public I mean the people that will buy the car just because its a Subaru, for the safety and other qualities that Subaru is know for.

seriously, wtf are you trying to say? that IS what makes a subaru a subaru, yet you're saying that the car isn't made for the general public? what you just said is the reason why people have bought subarus for the past several years, not because it's a good looking car. if you read the latest road & track survey of subaru impreza owners, the last quality that people had in mind when they initially bought their car was styling.

NHAT,

Back to what I said earlier about the car (STI) not being made for the general public. First of all if the STI was made for the general public, you would see more of them than the standard models. Yes, the '08 imprezas in particular might be selling good, but my point was that the earlier STI models sold because of their LOOKS, engine, and qualities. It was a package deal. It just upsets me to think that a company like Subaru has seemingly sold out to please the "masses" with the STI model in particular. Now when I see an STI hatch rolling down the street, im gonna wonder if its a new SI Civic or a new Hyundai Accent. This is why I think they screwed up royaly as far as looks are concerned. And as far as your quote about the Road & Track survey, the styling with most of those people was never an issue before because they didnt have to worry about it, but if you read the quotes from actual customers about the styling of the '08 STI, they said something along the line of: What is Subaru thinking? "I would never buy the '08 model".

On another thread on here, they said the WRX and STi are only 25% of Impreza sales. So they want to get the car to look more mainstream (read boring) to get more money. They don't care about us since we are the minority. And with the STi in F&F4 that will get the ricers to buy more and they will be while we are

i bet subaru is thinking that they just spent millions in r&d and now that 08 sales are jumping, they probly want to get paid.
thats usually how business works.
plus sti is just a status symbol. just like anything else in the market.
would you rather have the so-so nike running shoes, or the nike extreme series running shoe (fake names but you get my point.) to some it does not matter so they buy wrx's. but some feel they have to have the status so they buy into the sti.

just my .02

Just to let people know. GM originally owned 30% of Subaru. After the 08 Impreza came out GM sold most of what it owned to Toyota.

that's the best news i've heard all day!

oh and if you've read any reviews on the e92 m3...pretty much the same story as the 08 sti. a lot of people agree that the m3 has gone downhill over the past generations but that hasn't stopped it from selling.

Get your facts straight chief. Toyota bought 8.7% of FHI from GM, in 2005.

Well said.

I for one am an enthusiast...I liked the quirky style and performance of the 2007 for the money. Don't care much for cookie-cutter design of the 2008, so unless Subaru gets back to it's roots when it comes to the WRX/STI (a car for the enthusiasts), I for one will shop elsewhere when it comes time for a replacement.
