Default DVD case and the "Open" tab: Keep them or ditch them??

I bought a few DVD's today and found that 2 out of the 5 had an added feature, 2 small tabs that said "Open" that needed to be popped open before the DVD could finally be liberated.

Now I have seen these before, and never really given it much thought, but I got to thinking, what purpose could these possibly serve. I don't know about everyone else's DVD handling habits, but I am rarely faced with a situation in which I had hoped for an extra locking device to protect my DVD from accidental ejection.

In addition to the seemingly superfluous nature of these tabs, they do not appear to be very well constructed, as opening them all the way one time causes them to turn white as the limits of their elasticity are being tested. This leads me to believe that with repeated usage these tabs would soon be broken and rendered useless, thus allowing the accidental DVD ejection that these tabs were no doubt installed to prevent.

In either case I just snap the ****ers off, anyone else in OT slightly annoyed by these stupid little things?

Yes, I do the same thing. Why did they make child proof DVD cases?

I always rip 'em off... my old roommate got really heated at me once for doing it when I opened one of his movies.

"It's a SECURITY FEATURE. Leave them on."
"WTF? I don't think one of these LITTLE PLASTIC TABS are going to stop some nefarious villain trying to gank your DVDs whilst leaving the case, dude."
"... good point. Still, I like them."
"You're a moron."

Yeah, I actually had a roommate get slightly angry at me for doing it to one of my DVD's. He thought I was a moron for "purposely breaking" a DVD case.

The tabs may be stupid, but you never "break" another man's property. Yore intentions were good, but that's still damaging it.

One of my buddies likes to keep his DVD cases PRISTINE. His dad opened one out of the plastic wrapping using a knife and scratched the top of it. He was PISSED.

(Yes, he has issues)

Okay, maybe I should have shared the info that said roommate is also my best friend. It's my job to drive him nuts and point out how dumb some of the stuff he obsesses about is...

Smart people rip their DVDs to a hard drive and put the original in storage.
