btw - the model has had a 4 year development cycle - very normal for the industry - it's just we announced it before a pen had been put to paper (or CAD)

Here's a classic case of people not being happy when we don't hear anything soon enough, and also being not happy when we hear it too soon and it seems to take forever to get to production.

SOA_Blog - you'll never make everyone happy, no matter what you do.

I'm happier with more info, and even though I get impatient for it to get to production, I also realistically evaluate whether or not I could/would actually buy it if it made it to production right now. That answer, for me, is no. So just keep on keeping on...

Yeah, I didn't mean to start anything. I just felt like poking for fun! Gotta keep SOA Blog on their toes! Sometimes I feel bad that someone has the job of monitoring us besides the mods.

I'm definitely not in the market right now, but if the car begins production early 2012 we'll assume it comes out to dealerships in August, which will be perfect for me.

IIRC, my 2011 WRX was pre-ordered and arrived August 23rd. The manufacturing date was like April, I believe, is what the stamp/sticker on the car says.

Dear SOA Blog,

When can we expect more details e.g. preordering and specs about the 2012 WRX? You guys stopped making 2011s, so it leaves buyers such as myself in a standstill when there are very few 2011s on dealer lots.

Thanks

Halt production of 2011 WRX/STi so no cars on the lot for the whole summer, yet too early to release any information for 2012. Yep - I don't see anything wrong here.

Hey, Subaru fans don't need to know specs before buying. We buy them anyway.

I keep telling myself it makes sense from a business standpoint because Aug/Sept is generally when the next year's model comes out. I was almost willing to pay MSRP for a variant I want, but dealers dont even have it in stock and cant order it.

haha maybe it's a sign to to get a diff car

Still to early for the 2012 model year changes? No ordering info yet on the 2012 models?

Is there any consideration being given to bringing the Impreza 1.5R to the US?

Is there anything "new" with the '12 Legacy GT that would prevent me from going out and buying an Acura TL now, given that my biggest gripes are with the the seats, the infotainment system and lack of factory hids.

Have you done a chart comparison on them? There's not much that justifies paying roughly $12,000 more for a TL even with your gripes.

It's heaver and longer, doesn't have fold down rear seats, windshield wiper de-icer, less head room (front), less leg room (front and rear), less road clearance, less cargo room, larger turning radius, half as many cupholders, -1 City Fuel Economy, but it DOES have better basic warranty by 14k miles, bigger wheels and more HP.

semi premium badge
hids
much better seats
tighter turning radius
smaller lock to lock ratio
keyless entry
torque vectoring awd (better available torque splits as well)
good nav
Hard drive stereo
40 more hp
+1/+14k bumper to bumper
+1/+10k power train

Yes I've done the charts, but I've also driven them back to back, cupholders, really? You went there?

I've owned 7 Subaru's in the last 8 years, I really want to stay in a Subaru, the sad part is, most of what I've mentioned in the above is available from Subaru in other markets, which is what dissapoints me most.

I wasn't trying to put you on the defensive, just wondering what your specific were.

Yes, cupholders matter to me because I always have tons of people in my car that need to use them (family and friends, and they're always impressed). That's why I ask, because what's important for me obviously isn't important for you.

Case in point:
I've owned 5 Subarus in the last 9 years and wouldn't really concern myself with nav (living in Alaska, it's unnecessary), all Subarus have remote unlock which is good enough for most people, HIDs are better aftermarket (although Acura TL does have nice ones, so I'd probably keep those!) as well as the stereo, the Legacy has a smaller turn radius (is this different than "tighter"?), torque vectoring AWD sounds hot, no lie, and I don't know what the purpose of lock-to-lock ratio is. 1 more year of warranty and 40 more horsepower doesn't really seem worth it to me. $12k is a lot to pay for "better" seats.

And what's "semi premium badge"?

I haven't driven a new TL, just been in an early-2000 one and today drove next to a lady driving her new TL crazy on the road, constantly switching lanes and speeding. I think she was on the phone.

I would pay the extra money if the layout of the cabin was more user-friendly and comfortable, steering response felt better, throttle response was quicker, and cabin noise was minimal.

For me, I realized I wanted a performance car more than a luxury-type car, so I got the WRX Limited. The Legacy GT was my third choice, but I felt it was a bit too heavy and large for my taste. The STI Limited was my first choice, but I couldn't get a good deal locally and refused to pay $37k and more for an STI.

It sounds like you want a car geared more towards luxury, despite it being relatively boat-sized and heavy, but with some performance spunk to it, correct?

Again, I'm not trying to put you on the defensive at all. I want you to sell this car to me as it's sold to you. We'll start with the fact that I think the Acura TL looks like a nicer car, has better color options and nicer wheels. We'll ignore the Alaska Destination Fee.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that all the features that are available in today's legacy gt were available in the 06 spec b (minus a few cupholders :P)

And yes, I'm looking for a car with a slight more lux feel to it, I think you'd have to test drive them back to back to understand why the TL just feels like a better car. Lock to lock helps with the steering response, just makes the car feel tighter through the turns. The TL has been known to post better times at the track then the new S4 and 335i.

There's no doubt that if you look a price/content the legacy is still value leader.

The Legacy GT is still on my list, wish there were more of them locally to test drive, and it would be nice if they were to toss the US a few features available in other markets as I think there is a subset of people who'd be willing to pay for them to stay with a brand they've been loyal to.

Agreed. And thanks for clearing that up.

It doesn't seem that hard for Subaru to sell these things as limited editions (the versions in Japan that some of us want over here). I know they're a small company, but it seems like committing yourself to 1000 or so units of LHD versions of your TS/STI models wouldn't hurt anything, and I'm sure as a company they've made worse gambles.

At this point I'd settle for knowing when orders can be placed for the '12 Legacy models

SOA Blog: I see Subaru is one of the automakers that did not sign on to the new federal MPG agreement. I presume this was because of the agreement's inherent disadvantage for automakers that build few larger vehicles (makers such as Subaru, Suzuki, Porsche, etc.). I've seen statements from VW regarding its decision not to sign; does SOA have any official statements on this?

As much as SOA_Blog likes NASIOC, don't expect ANY unreleased factual information and previously undisclosed announcements to be made on here.
