Default Speedo. Easier to pull tranny or engine?

97 Impreza Outback Sport 2.2SOHC Auto. I need to replace the vehicle speed sensor and need to know which would be easier. I have space to do either but not too much past that to work. So is it more worth the time to have to take appart all the exhaust and all to drop the tranni or unhook stuff to lift the engine. Suggestions?

not sure lifting the engine would do you any good. you can probably get at it without dropping the trans, at least with a 5mt you can, really not sure wehre the vss is on the auto though.

Any second oppinions or more? Less of an issue as I'm having to drive it again without the speedo till I get my SVX with a new set of tires after last nights snowstorm and POT HOLE!

Bump to see if anyone has any more oppinions. I can unbolt the engine and hoist it enough to shimmy into the bellhousing. I'm thinking that's my best bet as the least amount of disassembling things. My 3 litter will be here in a few days but I still need to drive the Impreza a little longer till I can start my swap. I don't like this whole revlimiting at 4k cause of the lack of the sensor and it's also killing my gas milage too while I"m driving. So anyone anything? Does that sound like a good idea?

Why would you need to drop the transmission or pull the motor? Just drop the exhaust, get a wrench on it and switch it out. It can be done.

Cause it's in the bell housing.
