Angry cold starts can suck

My 2002 WRX made a horrible noise on cold starts. Took it in, it was the cam belt tensioner. They put a new one in and everthings fine.

I've had 2 cold start incidents so far (one after the Die Hard Gold battery). Never had a terrible noise, but keep us updated if you're still having cold start problems...

Well, Mister Tave!
So it was the cam belt tensioner, glad you got it figured out.
BTW: This is Greg Downing with the Silver Wagon that likes to sit at the bar and drink the PowerHouse brew!
See ya maybe next Thursday.

Was your "horrible" noise a loud knock that went away after the engine was warm? Did it come on suddenly, say after 5k miles on the car? I am ready to take mine in. It is embarrasing.
Thanks,

Lee

I have a 00 RS and did a tensioner and belt replacement this past weekend.
http://www.geocities.com/subarupat/tensioner.html
Here is pics of my old one. I ment to take pics of the new one. If you look at the pics you'll see the shaft. That is pushed out by a spring inside and pushes against engine block and which pushes down on the tensioner to automaticlly tension the blet. To keep it from bouching up and down. It's built like a strut with a spring inside. The oil dampins the any up and down motion. What happens is the seal leaks and the oil escapes and there is nothing to dampin it any more. So what you hearing is the tensioner going down and than up and bottoming out.

Hmmm.

My 05 STi makes an intermittent whining noise during cold starts. Sounds like a belt too tight/loose.

Argh, now I need to take it in.
