Default To Buy or Not to Buy

My final Decision lies in your hands. I found a dealer that is putting $12,000 worth of upgrades on the car making it a $36,000 WRX2002. HID lights, DMS Coilovers, STI Tops, STI scoop, ''18 inch wheels and tires, Kartboy shifter,Scooby exhaust,Defi Gauges,Inner cooler hoses,STI motor mounts and Tranny mounts.
My question is should I go for it or Find my self another $36,000 car?
I'm looking for preformance handling and Speed.

Go For the WRX

Find Another $36,000 Car[color=crimson]

Trying to post a poll if this doesn't work.

I would not pay a dealer for $12k in upgrades. Do you want a $36k AWD car? Get and Audi, do you want a $36k RWD car, get a BMW.

Unless the wheels, tires and the HID lights are worth $7000 it is not a good deal at all. Unless you want to finance all that I'd suggest you buy a bare bones WRX. After you put 12,000 worth of mods into it you'll have a beast.

If you want a 36k rex buy one from M2 performance. Handling and speed for 36K. Good luck.

Default Wow, I'm very surprised

Now I'm really confused. The popular vote is to not do it. I wonder if its because I'm puting extra's on the loan or if the cars just not worth it. Very concerned now. Guess when the dealer calls today I will turn him down. Now What?.... Save a little more and find a twin turbo Audi S4.

To me, it's not a matter of if the car is worth it or not, I just have a hard time putting 50% of the new purchase price into modifications. It seems silly. If you have a $36k budget, then go for a car that gives you everything you want out of the box. The WRX is a great car for the low-mid $20's. It gives you AWD, solid performance, and a good interior. If you step up to a German car, which I feel are the best cars made, you can get AWD, strong(er) performance, and a better interior. Depends on what you want... In the end it's your money, so do what ever you want. If I were to spend ~$36k on a car today it would be a BMW, not the AWD model either. If you need AWD go for an Audi.

Good God, is the WRX really that slow and poor of handling that you have to put an extra $12k into it? Of course it isn't!! Putting more than a few grand into it will be a waste of money that you'll never see again.

Buy stock for $23k, go for some easier extras like tires, turbo-back exhaust, etc, and be happy that you have a car to dust 99% of what's out there for "cheap" money..

Spend the other $10k on a house or something..

Default Speed and Luxury Cost Money

I wouldn't pay the dealer for the options. You could probably get all that done for around $5k. Dealers will always mark-up. Speed and luxury cost money. If you want luxury then I'd say the Audi and BMW are a better way to go with $35k. However, at bare bones the performance of the WRX will be at least equal if not better then the BMW or Audi. With another $4k in performance and wheel mods it won't even be close.
Don't forget, insurance and upkeep will both be more with Audi and BMW. However, the resale will probably be better. At the end of the day it will probably cost more per mile for the Audi and BMW even with upgrades to the WRX.

Keep in mind that if you did buy it, you would have a hard time selling it for the same price, even back to the same dealer.

Thumbs down Dont do it!

I agree with the fellow who said go the Shiv route. Just wait a few more weeks or so and buy the Vishnu Stage 1 setup (includes all the stuff from stage zero of course). It should have your 'RX moving pretty nicely, and it's probably as cost effective as your gonna get. Then use the remaining dollars for cosmetics or hookers or whatever it is you want.

I hope you didn't. If you didn't maybe you should take a look at the new SVT Mustang Cobra. 390 hp, and 390 lb. ft. of torque.

I wouldn't consider it if the car was used as a demo. The dealer might be trying to market and get rid of something that has been abused on test drives.

exactly, what you can spend 36k on a modded WRX, or even save up more money and get an S4, but you simply can't save money and buy a stock WRX and then put some of that extra 12k into mods yourself?

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I'm understanding that...

Yea, no kidding.

If you were willing to pay an extra $12k and want balls out performance... why not buy a stock wrx and mod it with what YOU want on it.

$12K spent yourself (read: not paying dealer markup) could give you a VERY phat, trick, or bitchin WRX... depending on what you put into it would determine which one of these adjectives best describes it

But seriously.. you could do $6K in performance and $6K into luxury/looks and still come out with something nicer than the alternatives.. at least in my opinion anyway.

If it were me:
$8K for STi 6 speed tranny
$2k for vishnu stage whatever with a few other goodies.
$1K for new turbo
$1K for heated seats, mirrors, ic spray, and misc other little toys.

Default The Deal

Ok, The deal was I wanted the WRX custom. The dealer was willing to install $9,000 worth of parts and the labor would of been $3,000. This is if I bought all the parts myself. I figured instead of the trouble of installing all these parts to just have them do it for me. The Exhaust and Defi Gauges would of given me a hard time. Anyway in the end I bought a 2002 collector firebird. Which makes me smiles alot. As my second car I'm ok with the RWD. This car Fly's. Time will tell for the reliablity though.

I had a V6 Bird. Loved it. (of course after having the RS, I would never go back to anything other than AWD) If it rains, snows, gets cloudy or if rain or snow is even forcasted for the following week, it is all over the place...of course that is half the fun of having a RWD beast.

I am sure you will have a blast with your new toy. Congrats and drive safe.
