Angry Augh! What's rattling?

There is something clanging loudly from the rear of my wagon when I drive over bumps, even fairly small ones. I haven't changed anything on my car for over a year, but the noise started a month ago or so. I thought maybe my exhaust was bent a little from hitting a snowbank or something. I was almost positive the noise was the exhaust pipe hitting the Perrin rear sway bar. I had my GF sit in the car and I repeatedly pushed the muffler to the right with my foot so it hit the sway bar. She said that was the sound. So I installed some Kartboy long hangers to keep the exhaust from moving around and hitting anything. THE DAMN NOISE IS STILL THERE when I drive over bumps.

Today I checked the hatch to see if it might somehow be rattling. I noticed that when it's open, there is play in the ball and socket of the hatch struts if I push up. Is this normal? Regardless, when the hatch is closed I don't think it makes any noise.

Another possible cause may be the suspension. I had a strut replaced by warranty a couple months ago because it was leaking oil. My springs are STI Pinks and I think the different compression may be to blame for the strut failure. Is there a chance I'm getting rattling from another bad strut? I haven't noticed any leaking oil.

are your back seats completely latched in their upright position? that will cause a rattle/clunk/thud noise when hitting bumps.

I had a mean rattle coming from the back of my wagon. I thought my hatch was about to come flying of. Turned out to be a leaf stuck in the roof rack tracks.

Had another mean rattling. Turned out being a can of octane booster and the funny jack-rotator-arm-thingy makin' sweet love.

Now, if only I could find out what that rattle in my gauge cluster is caused by

Yeah, after three Subarus, I'm used to the normal rattles and squeaks. This is worse than that though. It sounds like something is loose, and I think it might be suspension related. I did check my jack and lug wrench in that little storage cubby.

Ok, I'll check those when I get a chance. It sounds to me like something isn't tightened down properly. What sucks is now I've got an exhaust lowered on Kartboy hangers (it keeps hitting ice chunks on the road) with more vibration coming through the car for no good reason.

My wagon does the same thing!!

Especially over uneven pavement, it is very frequent...like rattle, rattle, rattle...!!!

I have checked my strut tower bar 5 times, switched back to factory endlinks and played with the exhaust to no end.

SO, tighten the top bolt on the strut?
Torque down the endlink bolts? How tight are those supposed to be?
I have checked the jack...

I was contemplating taking the spare tire and everything out of the back of my car!

Edit....

Could it be this?

4. wagon spare tire rattle thanks "sjl1614" for solution
solution - Where the spare tire "cover" sits down and rests of the plastic trim, right under there, the trim sits on metal tabs. Which is the souce of the rattle. use some foam tape on the metal tabs and the noise is gone - sjl1614

Haha, I had a squeak that I could not figure out for the life of me. Everytime I would have a friend ride along to help find it, the #$&@er wouldn't make a peep. Turned out to be one of the bolts holding the passenger seat in place was loose, but when it had weight on it it wouldn't squeak!

Good luck!

Well, figured out what was wrong. It was a faulty bushing in the Perrin endlink causing the sway bar to move around. I put the stock sway bar, endlinks, and mounts back on and now I'm working on getting the endlinks warrantied.

I had the Gruppe-S ones in the front, bearing tore right out....no way for a warranty, IMO.
