I think I'm going to run my car through the I/M test. I'm curious to see if it'll pass with just one cat. It's no pass, no pay, right? I'll be the guinea pig for all those interested in removing cats.

Do they do a visual inspection of the engine also here in AK? A few people have told me that my intake (Ganzflow) wouldn't pass emissions.. If they do a visual that is...

You may have a chance if you keep your car warmed up. Try to leave it running while you are waiting to get it in. Cat's only work well when they are very hot. The sole purpose of that cat in the downpipe is to help while the car is warming up. So with only one cat, if you have it already warmed up(do some hard driving just before you get there too), you should stand a chance.

I think it is no pass no pay. Atleast I know it is at Quick Lube, and I'd guess it's that way everywhere else.

They do visual inspections here,my eclipse would'nt pass with the intake, intercooler piping and bov.Had to take 'em of to get it registered again! EPA sucks! This is the only reason why i still haven't installed an intake yet and put a stock looking BOV so I don't have to go through the hassle of taking it off everytime i get an IM.(well maybe the bov is not a big deal, takes 5 min to take it off)Same case for my HKS exhaust,I can just unbolt it and put the stock ones when i get the IM.Just keep all your stock items so u can just bolt it back when you're ready to get the test. It'll be a pain specially for u cause you got a lot of mods already but hey we're here,we'll give u a hand, right guys?

I think that's a crock of ****, how can you claim it won't pass emissions via a visual check, to me, if that little wand tells them my car put's out an acceptable amount of emissions, then I passed my IM, regardless of my intake/exhaust setup. :monkey:

Of course, I guess we'll see when I go in to get mine.

That is bull ****. They're basically requiring you to use OEM parts. There is no law that says you have to replace your intake or exhaust with OEM parts if the stock part were to break. I wonder if they'd fail you for having a cheap Fram air filter, or midas muffler. That's bull ****.

Where did you have it inspected? Maybe a smaller shop that does mods for people would skip the visual part.

Exclamation

my cousin used to have an acura integra LS with a lot of mods. He had an intake, ignition, XS engineering ecu, headers, tanabe exhaust, JG engine dynamics Cams and Cylinder head. when he took his car for IM all he had to do was swap his ECU for a stock one and he still passed the visual and emissions test.

Question

Is that Integra here in Alaska? I'm not gonna worry about IM till that day happens. When that day happens can someone please give me a hookup?

Visually, I don't think they'll even notice the uppipe. Possibly, the downpipe. I'm not worried about the visual inspection. It's the sniff test that might get me.

I can't believe I only got five votes. What's up?

Why not run my car through the way it is and see if it pass the visual and emission inspections? This way it will benefit everyone. Winslow

Yeah, I would run it through, then revert it back to stock ONLY if it didn't pass.
BTW, when you need your IM?

Well they made me take the intake off the RS, just because they said it would fail the visual inspection.

But thats the way it goes, as least it is not as bad here as it is in Japan. But then if we were there we could have the kick-butt cars!

I still don't quite understand the point of the visual inspection. I understand the visuals down home, you know the turn signals working, no apparent structural rust/damage, exhaust not dragging, etc.... but to say that it fails because of the intake, I don't know the point, especially since if you go there, "fail" the visual, go home, put the stock intake on, then go back, it passes, they got to know that you are just going to go back home and put it back the way it was before. Why then does it really matter so much, again, if the wand says my IM OK, then I'm OK, regardless if I got stock, Ganzflow, COBB, etc.. intake. As long as my intake is not interfering with anything, or is a safety hazard....

Of course I am probably beating a dead horse here, and I'm just ranting, we'll see when I go in.

I don't see the big deal with visual either. If you pass the sniffer, I think you should pass the test, no matter what the visuals are.

Lets all write our congressmen!

Angry

I think its those old f**ks in the municipality that makes that crap up. Congressmen don't do s**t for the city like the useless ass APD. They put more stupid laws in effect like that instead of looking for real crime.

With regard to when the I/M will be needed: I purchased a '99 Miata in April of '98. In 2000 I took it in for the I/M and was told that the car wasn't 2 years old and didn't need one at which point the promptly gave me my tags!!! So, the way I look at it, I have another 3 years to go!!!!

I stopped at Williams by my house and ran into a guy who works at Quality Tune. I asked him about my car and he even looked under the hood. He said that any mod having to do with emissions (i.e. intake, exhaust, headers, uppipe) will need a C.A.R.B. sticker. I think they wouldn't catch the uppipe or exhaust because there is still a cat in the system and it's in the stock location. I'm a good bullsh*****. I'm not sure if they are competent on the Subaru Exhaust system because it is so new. I'm sure in a couple years they will now more about the WRX. As for the sniff test... On cars 96 and newer with a few exceptions such as diesel trucks, they don't do it. They check the ECU via OBD-2 for emissions problems such as stored codes. If there isn't a CEL light or any codes then you are good to go.
