Default Adam Carolla to Host American Top Gear?

Quote:
We brought you news months ago about NBC importing the BBCs killer car show Top Gear to the U.S. Immediately following the announcement, rumors of who would host the U.S. version. Rumors, of course, included Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno. Now, because he has a bigmouth, Adam Carolla has claimed he will be one of the hosts.

Carolla is most notable for his television shows Loveline and The Man Show and, some really sub-par movies. Sure, hes an annoying nonsensical moron, but, in his defense, hes an enthusiast.

He spilled the beans on his radio show on 97.1 Free FM yesterday. Now, no one from NBC has confirmed that Carolla is indeed a host, so, for now, we can only speculate.

I think he'd be good, but they need a bonafide car expert on there too - won't be just Carolla. I'd love to see Leno on there as well - his commentary on cars on his website is great stuff.

He's got the right kind of "edge" to be the "Clarkson" of the 3 hosts...

Lets hope for Leno and Seinfeld to round out the other two

meh... im not a carolla fan. I really hope leno gets onboard. i also have a feeling because this is going to be in america... they wont be able to trash talk the american cars. Which is going to ruin the show. Its like watching a variation of knighrider 08 or something...

Unless there will be guaranteed girls jumping on trampolines, then Carolla should not even have been a suggestion.

Why do you need a car expert? Nobody on Top Gear is a car expert (aside from the Stig). You do realize that they read from scripts.. right?

They're entertainers who happen to be car enthusiasts. Adam Carolla fits the bill perfectly.

* James May does qualify at least, as being a bona fide member of the automotive press for a long time... but you'll notice in the show that they always crap on his 'expert' opinion.

I wouldn't mind seeing Leno doing the show because he is a bona fide car lover and avid collector. But seriously, all NBC needs to do is stick to a simple formula of having some fun, car-loving, knowledgeable hosts driving every car available in the North American market and maybe once in a while bringing a featured guest to drive one particular model (some rental car) around a track and compare their record times. Throw in a few fun experiments through out the season; a lot like the show they are trying to copy. Why must American TV fudge everything up and make it too Hollywood? It will suck if they spend too much time and money looking for some big name host.

Seeing how they don't have any definite hosts yet, I'd say not anytime soon.

One of the creepier pictures of corolla. I also think they are gonna need and ex-racer or a more mechanical oriented host as well. Maybe recruit a European guy to create an interesting dynamic.

Its not about knowledge, the car mags give you all the tech know-how you need.

It's about car culture, not the classic car snob, nor the young ricer punk, but those who like cars as part of their normal life. You watch top gear to see someone take those hard to buy special cars and make lots of tire smoke.

Clarkson's got an Eng. degree and ~30 years of automotive journalism exp.. Carolla.. is a poor comedian at best.. No comparison. The US Top Gear is going to be a poor inbred, trailer park cousin to the UK original. meh, I get BBC here anyway so i'll just continue to watch the original.

You just listed two on the show (though I'm not sure I'd count the Stig, since he never talks - only serves as the driving monkey...which isn't a bad gig at all!).

I just mean, the show needs someone with real automotive driving experience and expertise who can give good feedback on vehicle dynamics - they don't need to be an engineer or a race car driver, but more than just Mr. Celebrity funny guy.

Seems like every time a foreign show is Americanized, it doubles up on the hot chicks, loses all seriousness and in-depth info, and basically turns into a comedy.

There not going to talk about any of the cars we care about so it doesn't really matter who hosts the show.

And the fact that Leno is a huge car collector doesn't make him any more qualified. Many of us can be just as funny and have an equally impressive collection of cars if given his writing staff and his paycheck.

I actually liked the way "The Adam Corolla Project" went. If anyone had seen it on TV, it was his shot at home repair ( or his own version of flip that house ) in 2005. Being a prior carpenter of sorts it went alright.

I am giving him a vote, as many others are saying we really dont have a long list of great cars here in the US market i just hope they pick the right cars and and try to somewhat follow the BBC's Top Gear as close as possible.

Either way I'll still be watching the BBC.

an inbred, led paint chip eating version of Clarkson, with a 10 year old reading comprehension.... sure

he's just not funny. the ONLY thing good about the man show was the beer boy and the women on trampolines... In all of his work he has been an annoying distraction at best

but he likes cars... just like the rest of the overwhelming vast majority of americans... that is no qualification

as a fan of bbc top gear i'm all for carolla on the show. i listen to his morning show and he's a lot funnier than the man show ever let on. he's also a big car enthusiast and friend of leno's because of their shared interest in cars. he reguraly attends the pebble beach concourse and has quite a nice collection of cars including a replica BRE 510, an E30 M3, several classic lambo's and many more. he's also a sarcastic "tell it like it is" comic as was mentioned and should be very straight forward in his car opinions (he is on his radio show and constantly brags about is ability to complain about anything including receiving a lambo he purchased off ebay).

for those that only know carolla from the man show check out his work from love line and his morning radio show. he should do really well at hosting the american version of top gear.

So who exactly qualifies? Good luck finding an ex pro racer with any on camera presence to do this show.

I love the British Top Gear! Clarkson is great! Just the right wit and sense of humor for that show!

Adam Carolla? I dunno. Is the American reasonably priced car for the stars to drive going to be Carolla's Corolla?

I suppose, if you have some people who are good in front of the camera and know their stuff on car's, then it would be ok. However, I am not confident. Amercian TV has a way of destroying any good concept for a show. One of the more prolific US stations would be better off picking up Top Gear as it is now.

I'm telling you, Tanner could pull it off.

Good on screen personality, decent driver, women love his baby face....

Tanner Foust, the drifto/rally racer????

Maybe for some objective subjects, but I wouldn't anchor the show on his personality.
