Default reverse needs extra power

i just got me a 97' outback sport... auto. anyways, when i put it in reverse, it will go for about 5 seconds then come to a complete stop. after that, i have to press on the gas and give it power to reverse. PLEASE HELP! im really worried that its tranny problems. Oh and one more problem i have, when im going at a speed of about 45 mph or above, when i press on the brakes the steering wheel shakes. what is the cause of that problem?

have you checked the trans fluid (level & condition)? sounds like a trans problem--possible slippage.
