Default Want to buy used Subaru but

I have several friends in the Montreal area with 2000/2002 Legacy models,3 of them have had motor replacements and one of them has replaced his engine twice, their problems involve major piston slap and related issues, not a great reliability record i would say.
Does any one know if Subaru has corrected this problem/ and if so what model years did this correction start?which engine model years are to be avoided?
Thanks

Mods sorry for the cross post.

A little bit of piston slap is OK as long as it goes away after it warms up... Mine has been doing it since about 4,000 KMs and now I have over 268,000 KMs with nothing ever done to engine. Subaru engines are just noisy-er than most others and even tho it may sound bad they just keep going...

Would you buy a car model that 3 of your friends had to have the motor replaced before 30k? thats why i'm asking for a little history on the years and engine models to steer clear of when i start looking for a used Subaru.

I guess what I was trying to say was piston slap as "normal" for boxer engines and they probably shouldn't have done anything. But if the costumer whines enough...

The problems were major as one of my frieinds was the head mechanic of our plant and wouldnt have wasted Subaru's time for a mere ticking noise at start up,another friends Subaru i actually got to hear and the noise coming out of that engine was not healthy sounded like a diesel engine with a broken connecting rod and this was at 15000 kilometers. So i was just curious if any one else had problems with early 2000 2.5 engines.

i think anything from 2002 - on should be more reliable. there was the thing with the heads in the 2.5 liters, late 90's.

The engines go forever as long as you do your normal matince and don't mind the knocking sounds.
