Default Saleenís $100K limited edition S302E Ford Mustang

Quote:
Saleenís $100K limited edition S302E Ford Mustang

Itís hard to imagine Steve Saleenís performance shop has been around for 25 years, but the company today is celebrating the milestone with the launch of the SA-25 Sterling Edition Ford Mustang. The car is based on the uprated S302 Extreme edition pony car, which means itís packing a 620hp twin-screw supercharged V8 engine with more than 600ft-lb of torque. To ensure all that power is delivered reliably, engineers added a host of performance upgrades.

The list includes a forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, individually blueprinted forged pistons, 5 axis CNC aluminum cylinder heads, high flow fuel injectors, and a set of high performance camshafts. The mega engine is then mated to a short throw, 6-speed manual transmission and Max-grip rear differential, which sees the Extreme edition reach 60mph in less than four seconds and clicks through the quarter mile in just under 12 seconds.

To get that kind of performance, the team had to get the S302Eís power to the ground. This is accomplished with standard 20in, five-spoke forged aluminum alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires. Handling is improved with Saleenís Racecraft suspension set-up and brake package. The performance brake system features 15in vented, slotted rotors with 6-pistons calipers in the front and 11.8in rear vented discs with single piston calipers in the rear.

If all this sounds like something youíd like to see sitting in your garage then youíd better be prepared to front the $100,000 asking price.

About the ZR1

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 is Chevrolet's first entry into the world of supercars. It is the fastest and most powerful car ever built by General Motors. It is powered by a new, supercharged 6.2L LS9 V-8 that produces at least 620 horsepower and helps propel the car from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds and to a top speed of more than 200 mph.

Supporting its prodigious power output are race-bred elements that include a six-speed manual transmission with a dual-disc clutch; massive 15.5" Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes; 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels; the second-generation of GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control; and stronger axles.

The ZR1 is instantly recognizable, thanks to unique exterior appointments that were developed to enable the car's performance, including extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber on the hood, fenders and roof. Some of the carbon fiber components, including the front splitter, rocker extensions and roof panel, feature a visible carbon fiber pattern coated with a unique, UV ray-blocking finish.

Distinguishing visual cues also include a polycarbonate window in the hood that offers a view of the LS9's intercooler below, new and wider front fenders that have a unique dual-vent design and a full-width rear spoiler. The large, 19- and 20-inch wheels also are specific to the ZR1.

Production begins in July 2008 and is limited to only 2,000 vehicles per year - each identified with a special VIN that denotes its sequential build number.

With the nose heavy weight distribution and softer front suspension, the rear brakes probably aren't doing much anyways. What the world doesn't need is another special edition Mustang, especially one that's priced about $50k over its actual value.

Let's see... $100k 620 hp Corvette that could be mistaken for a $45k Corvette to the untrained eye or $100k 620 hp Mustang that could be mistaken for a $20k Mustang to the untrained eye... speed aside (in favor of the ZR1), I'd rather drop six figures on the Vette.

I've been to the Saleen store in the Irvine Spectrum, and the stuff that the "salesmen" say is silly to me. But Steve Saleen himself is a pretty cool guy.

I'm all for mocking a $100k Mustang, but running 11.9 is slightly different from running 12.9 quarter mile.

^ Maybe, but I'll wait for some actual performance numbers.

The justification that Saleen (and his salesmen) have for spending such coin on what is practically a warrantied souped-up Mustang is their claim of it holding its value over a five-year period a lot better than a comparable car (usually a C6, which is what most potential customers tend to mention). But I don't know how many people tend to be in the market for a used five year-old Saleen Mustang no longer under warranty and are willing to pay top dollar.
