The intake, power steering, belt cover, turbo chimney, evap canister, bov, fuse box etc all look identical to the legacy turbo, which means that even though this is a JDM car, you will probably have some luck finding identical USDM parts (at least, aside from engine bits).
Engine bits?

You mean like the identical to USDM bearings, crankshaft, rods, head castings, valves, spark plugs, exhaust manifold and gaskets?

How much different are the EJ20G's to USDM EJ's Splinter? Would these engines be a pain in the ass, or are we paranoid?

Most of it is the same. Some early EJ20Gs were closed deck, like the EJ22T, but thats a positive with no drawbacks. All the bearings, gaskets etc are the same.

Pistons and piston rings are different, but aftermarket support is there. The cams are different, and most of the early WRXs use hydraulic lash adjusters instead of direct actuation like later subies, but theres no wear parts there. The valves are the same. Intake manifolds are nearly the same as USDM EJ25D manifolds (Pre 99 Legacy GT, RS25), same gaskets, etc, but the USDMs are coilpacks, the EJ20Gs are coil-on-plug.

The only parts that you really need to ever worry about trying to find replacements for are the coils, pistons and rings, and any of those things you should be able to replace with aftermarket components.

All tuneup parts are readily available .
