Hou: fence guy cut big phone cable in back yard...how much will this cost to fix?

talk about having a bad day...what a bummer

anyone ever had this happen? how much does swbell charge to fix this kind of thing? there were no underground cable signs or anything

he will more than likely lose any license he has. You should call before digging any time. I'm actually in telecom and have seen this many time by many many many construction/landscaping companies.

take a pic of the cable and I'll be able to tell you how long it should take to fix

It's a big one with lots of wires sticking out, according to my wife.3

Do they just patch it?

they will take a splice box, and have to individually splice everything back together. Depending on if it was a 100/500/1000 pair cable depends on how long it will take

the cable is as thick as a thumb and has about 25 wires in it

oh its a 50 pair lateral cable it should only take about a hour or two to fix if the tech isn't a total mullett. Fence guy prolly won't get into too much stuff just as long as its a residential area. He will prolly be charged a good grip for the repair.

lol no probably alot more.....depending on what SBC/ATT decides to do they could come back and get him for a ton more money. If the people that got their lines cut decide to come to SBC for credits, or people that run business out of their house for loss of business ect...they will come back to the party responsible.

Worst case scenerio: $200 for emergency dispatch + around maybe 120/hr for repair time which starts once the tech gets in his truck to the time he gets packed up and drives off + cost of supplies if they make him pay for the splice box + Damages

i'd be a little more worried about the fine if they report that the cable was cut....

those fines for not calling get up there in the 5k-10k range... we just got a warning letter from the city

its not a city fine its a govt fine. City dosn't care regardless but what if someone had a heart attack and couldn't dial 911 cause of the phone being down. That's the main issue here. If he has his own company it'll just go twords the company insurance if it is him personally then there is a chance ATT/SBC won't do a thing just give yall a stern talking to and a nasty letter.

I know that sounds crappy but they are not to blame for this so if someone raises a stink then they can just point the finger at that guy and he will take all the heat for it. Also they may not have many on that lateral anyways. It could result in a fcc fine but also remember he just knocked out 911 emergency service to everyone that cable fed.

How did it get cut in the first place?? Only thing I've really seen a cable that size cut with was a freaking back ho. If he did it with a shovel then I'm sorry he's must not be too bright. You have to think that cable is damn near solid copper and it would take a couple strikes to cut it in half.

it's really weird - it runs catecorner from a next door neighbor to the empty lot behind my house, right on the corner of the lot
