Unhappy Drink holder in 2000 2.5 RS a pain in the rearend!

This is a very very very small problem but one that bothers me daily since I eat fast food at least once a day.
Not sure if this is where to post this but just wanted to share with yall a problem with my 2000 2.5 RS drink holder.
When I bought the Impreza I thought "Wow I get the best performing NON-Turbo car on the road with a Drink Holder". Well was I wrong. It seems to hold small or regular sized fast food drinks fine but if you are thirsty and want an xtra large drink...well hold on to your shifter knobs. Driving a manual and trying to hold a drink in an undersized drink holder while taking a turn can be a pain. The RS's can't stay in 1st too long so that inevitable shift to 2nd in mid turn is oh so much fun with the drink tipping over "right into my winshield washer button on my turnsignal lever". Now my button sticks on unless I press it 5 or so times to unstick it. Any idea how I can get that thing apart and clean it.
I know I'm a bit wordy but I'm new to posting. Mostly just read the other posts. Thanks for any help I can get.

Chris

There's a part which acts as a surround for the drink holder...probably JDM-only, but if you're intersted in pursuing...

Try that cup holder in the winter. It will heat your tasty cold treat for you. On the up side, it keeps your coffee warm.

Cool

Brainwalker,
As an aficionado of fast food myself I can assure you the stock RS drink holder can easily hold the "Big Bell" 44oz drink from Taco Bell as well as the "Super Size" drink from McDonalds (barely! you have to be careful with that one, don't hit any large bumps or you may break the holder). It's the large size plastic cups with the stupid skinny bottoms that are supposedly made to fit drink holder that are a problem in the pull-out dash mounted drink holder. You have to use the center console drink holder for those. So at certain restaurants, if you get the Xtra-large size, you should be alright. Make sure you're pulling the drink holder all the way out also. You have noticed the two settings for small and bigger drinks? There are two stops when you pull it out.

Good luck and....fast food is no good for you! Stop eating that crap!

Fred

ps-mine is a MY99, I don't think the changed the drink holder from 99 to 2000, but I could be wrong.

don't put a water bottle in that dash cup holder, unless its wider than those 16oz crystal geyser ones. i carved through a tight R turn at high speed and the crystal geyser flew across the cockpit. yes, it was open.. -g

I only ever use the cup holder in the center console. Much safer. Plus, on long trips after you've finished with the drink, you can just close the lid on it (even over 32oz cups) and it won't be hanging about in the footwells, getting soda goo all over the carpets.

If i have a bottled drink like a coke or dr pepper i usually stick it in between the passenger seat and the ebrake handle but be careful when you pull it out.

I like the center console drink holder. It works with "big gulps" and doesn't spill when you turn.

Just wait until the drinks drip because the person over filled them. The buttons and knobs on my Sony CD player stick like they were glued.
My solution, I quit buying drinks from fast food places. Water doesn't make things sticky.

It works okay on the soda cans, but any of the bigger cups you get from fast food places are an accident waiting to happen. You don't know how many times I've had top heavy cups just spill all over my passenger side floor. Lucky for me I had no passengers each time and I have a Hoover steam vac to clean up the messes.

Note to everyone, Steam Vacs are good, you should have one.

I totally agree the dash cup holder is a POS, it can't even hold a bottle of water. The center console one, just rocks; it can fit a supersized cup at ease without the worry of spilling.

Second day I had my car, I went to McD's, and put the Dr. Pepper in the niffty little dash cup holder. First left I made, cup tipped, Dr. P all over the seet, floor, and door of my brand new car! That was the last time that cup holder was ever used. The one in the center console is perfect; cup can't tip over, it holds big drinks, and your soda doesn't get heated by the heater vent in front of the dash holder. How stupid was that idea? "Lets put a drink holder right in front of the dash vent, but only the side that actually blows air, and then lets make it so you can't close the vent! That way everyone can have thier favorite beverage: warm soda! But lets make the drink holder suck, so the drinks always spill; that way people will have to keep thier interior clean, since they'll always be cleaning up thier drinks! It's brilliant!" OK, I'm done now.

Cause the engineers were Japanese

Actually, its quite true. Cup holders you clip onto the vents are quite popular in Japan.

Oh I disagree. Just ask my ex-gf who got covered with lemonade that was in the center console. It's much harder to make it spill, but if you got the skills like me you can still do it.

I use windex to unstick the buttons and such from spilled drink on the stereo.
