Default Possible power steering pump gone bad?

Hey all,

I just purchased a 96 Impreza with a EJ20G swap and it was fine on the drive home. However, since I've been home sometimes when I turn the wheel there is a loud squeaking noise. (Sounds almost like a turkey call.....yeah, I live in Indiana, how could you tell? ) But it only happens when I have the wheel turned and when I turn it all the way right or left it is incredibly loud and the pulley even locks up for a second. So I think it's the pump, but if you guys could give some input or confirm...that'd be great! thanks in advance!

Check the belt tightness and see if it's glazed and worn first.

How does the steering feel when you turn the wheel? Is it jerky at all? If not, would tend to think it's something else.

My wife has a Jaguar XJS as a project car, which, coincidentally, we also think has a power steering pump issue. But on that car, the steering feels like total crap - it's very heavy and jerky. It's also got a junkyard pump, so who knows what kind of shape that's in. Can't even blame the Brits for that one - the V12 got ditched for some Detroit iron.

Dumb question but did you check the fluid? Sounds like air in the PS system.

Checking the belt should be first. Most likely the cause.

Had a similar issue after my inlet install. (removed PS line) I had to crack the banjo bolt and bleed the air out.

Yes, it affects the wheel. When it makes the sound my steering wheel twitches and stuff.

Checked the PS system, fluid is up where it should be. But it looks like it's the belt. I haven't had time to tighten it yet, because I'm an idiot and need to do school work.

I don't think it would be air because when I bought the car it wasn't making the sound, it's after a 2400 mile road trip that it started.

I had the same problem. It was an issue with the belt, so once you get that taken care of, re-post if it still has problems.

Got a new power steering pump last year... heard the same noise. A turkey is a pretty good description. Are you losing power steering fluid at all? I ended up having to replace the power steering rack because it was not cooperating! Good luck!

For what it's worth, I didn't have this symptom when my power steering rack went. I had crawled under the car to take the skid plate off to do an oil change, and found what turned out to be power steering fluid all over the crossmember. I suppose it might have started acting funny eventually if I hadn't found it.

Alright, pulled the belt to check it. Belts in good shape, put it back on and tightened it up. Squeaking is gone!!! YAY!

Glad I don't have to replace the pump, yet. *looks around*
