My car hiccups... not a good sign? not so bad?

I have a 1998 Impreza wagon... when I let the car idle, every once in a while it will sort of bog up a little bit, the rpms dip a little bit and then come right back up to normal. It did this for months, and never changed. It didn't get any worse, so I figured there was no serious problem... It used to happen just a little bit, but I just had some work done on it yesterday (fixed a little exhaust leak and got a new catalytic converter) and after that was finished it was hiccupping a lot more frequently, and I could feel it while I was driving the car. It has slowed down a bit in the last day, but still a little more often than it was.

I put some fuel injector cleaner stuff in it, and i'm waiting to work through this tank of gas, I'm hoping that will do it, but I'm nervous it might be something else...

any ideas?

Try cleaning the MAF sensor. Check your air filter too and make sure it's not dirty.

I dunno if it might be the same, our 95 Impreza wagon was in the shop and we had some similar symptoms except sometimes it would actually stall when coming to a stop and hard to start some times. It seems it was a sticky EGR valve. Any one know if the '98s had egr valves?

Just though I'd update. It turned out to only be a little bit of water in the gas tank. Some Thermo-aid did the trick, and its as smooth as ever.
